No mention of an Orion? I have H41, Orion and 4.11 on 35's = 81:1 crawl. I'm looking at 4.56's in the future but still like the 4.11 for the hiway and the 81:1 worked great on the Rubicon.

I would do a sm420 over an Orion as it's a third the Price if not cheaper, orions are bling but spendy.

Orion will allow you to keep the LC 4 speed transmission which is much better than the SM420 if you plan on doing any street driving. SM420 is really a 3 speed transmission with a granny low. Granny low is not going to be useful for street driving.

Orion is pretty much a bolt on and go deal. No driveline mods. Don't have to spend time finding new bellhousing and clutch.

Yes, it costs more, but you're getting a brand new transfer case for the price. Don't have mess with trying to rebuild a used junkyard transmission and/or rebuilding your existing 3 or 4 speed LC tcase. Also, you would be upgrading the LC transfer case since the Orion case is much stronger than a stock LC tcase.

I'd rather save up and get the Orion than to put something together now and end up regretting it later.

I know some people knock the 420 and 465 for being "truck" transmissions with long throws, and only being able to use 3 gears on the street..

BUT you're driving a 30+ year old box... I personally like the Truck feel of my 420. Gives the vehicle character. Plus I only have to shift 3 times :)

I also DD'd my rig for 2 years 30 miles a day in bay area traffic.

'Nother fan of the SM420 here. I've run one for 10 years in the 40 and while it's time to update, it's been good.

Also have not one, but 2 SM465s for future projects.:D

To get your gearing low, it's going to cost money. You just can't get away from that. If $2000 seems like too much money, stop now and run what you have.

My first move would be to run an Orion behind an H42 to get the strength of the cast iron case. If that gearing isn't enough, you could run an SM420/465 in front of your Orion. That would take you into awesome territory and not break the bank.

If you still need more gearing H42/toybox/Orion would be awesome, but overkill. I think that's what Rusty Dan runs. For that money, I'd run SM465/Atlas and a 14 bolt rear.

Currently, I run H41/toybox/split case in my FJ60, and it is nearly perfect, but it was a bit spendy. It's really, really slow.

You are correct, I have the Orion - Toy Box combo, it's pretty awesome on the trail but I wouldn't do it that way again. I'd probably do the set-up you have in your 60.

I like my SM420

this rig was suppose to be the somewhat budget wheeler but there is no such think with landcruisers, if any rig would be getting an orion or toy box it would be my 45:D i think im just going to build it the way it is at the moment and if i stumble across a sm420 or 465 ill see about finding an adapter and everything.

A Landcruiser budget is just till you run out of money and have to save up some more to continue on.

The FJ45 can handle H55/Toybox/splitcase which is the whole enchilada: highway, mid range, and L-O-W.
The Aussie 4spd + Orion gives me 4 full gears and good low range.

if you all ready have a split transfer case you could just buy a Marks gear for the low range. 2 different gear range options and the lowest is 3.05:1 cost from 325 to 500 depending on needs.
Landcruiser Gears
I put one in mine with a h55f transmission and 4.88 ring and pinion. I cant remember my exact low range gear but it is some where around 90:1 it will crawl.
with a stock set up its a 55% reduction. definately one of the least expensive options.

what are your costs based on?

Yea, those gears are $1,8XX.xx and $300-$500 for a rebuild kit...

I run a 36'' tire, 4:88 r&p,3-speed case, sm465 and sbc. No idea the crawl ratio is but 1st is great on the rocks and 2nd throws the mud. Good cheap combo.

6.55x2.313x4.88= 73.93

Corrected

Old setup was 158:1, new set up is 44:1 or 78:1 x (torque converter)
