How much do they normally run???? There backordered and doesn't show anything.

I had to call them for mine and it took about a month to get. I used the 465 to split case. They work really good as far as set up, all the adaptors you need are on the case and you can run a mini case mount. I figured the price was not bad considering what you get. I priced several different adpators for varoius set up's and the toy box seemed to be the way to go for me and gives you several different gearing options.

It's the torque multiplication of an auto. You "basically" have a 2:1 reduction because of how slow you can go due to the Torque converter.

40:1 is pretty good for an auto.

My FJ40 is about 50:1 - 700R automatic (3), D300 (4), 4.1 Cruiser diffs...torque multiplied, 100:1. It works excellent, and a correctly set up auto makes a world of difference.

For an auto, shoot for 40-60:1...for the stick 80-120:1. I was 63:1 with my old SM465 and it was marginally too fast for really good control in some situations.

That is great info there...Someone had told be that, but I didnt quite understand how that worked.

I'm going to try something I've never tried before, seeing if I can post a link to another website. I spend a lot of time on a forum for the GM 6.5 diesels. The subject of torque convertors and how they work came up. The following is from that thread.

Don!
Great! Thanks for the links. The whole auto tranny had always been a mystery to me. All I knew is that I DID NOT wanna MESS WITH IT!

chicago, you're very welcome. It's just a small payback for all the good info I've gleaned from your thread.

I have felt the same way as you. Over the years I have dabbled in just about every aspect of vehicles. Although maybe I didn't know the correct methods I wasn't afraid to jump in and try. There were two areas though that I avoided, the auto tranny and the differential, because of complexity and lack of the proper tools.

Spending several years lurking here on Mud has changed my outlook on that though. Differentials, I'd jump right in because of having this great forum to go to for help. Auto trannies, I'm still leary but I'll now open them up and swap easily accessible parts.

Auto's are not really difficult. There are some tools that are pretty necessary when assembling one tho.

Glad my struggles have been able to help someone over the years here.

i think im going to get it running and driving to see how it does. but i dont wanna get new DLs made for the SOA and find out it sucks:rolleyes:

A little more than the mini truck toyboxes if I remember right. but i dont remember.

There is a local guy I know who is running a SM420, toybox, LC case. I hear through the grpevine he is looking to go auto. I'll keep you posted if he wants to sell his setup.
that would be awesome, if i found a setup like that i would put that in my 45 and run my sm420/3speed case in the 40. let me know thanks man

I have a 32 spline 465 hooked to a 4 speed case I'm looking at getting rid of. Not sure who makes the adapter( its still in the 40) but i know the t case has 32 spline input. no spud shaft.

i've got a sm420, AA rockbox, 3 speed LC t-case, and 4.11 gears......and i NEVER use that freaking rockbox, it was a complete waste of money and time putting it in there imo.

and that's not just southeast wheeling, i did the rubicon and moab 2 years ago and never used it a single time.

if you go with an automatic, it might be pretty nice to have a crawl box inbetween the auto and a 3 speed case though since auto 1st isn't very low.

Your right, send it to me and I'll make sure that POS is properly disposed of. :grinpimp:

like stated before I have 420 to toybox to 3 speed LC case. I usually keep just the 3 speed case in low and very seldom do I use the toybox unless I am wanting a nice slow crawl for dancing on rocks or trying to get it to grab and keep from spinning on the way up a steep ledge or something. but the 420 and 3 speed combo puts my crawl ratio at 75.84:1 so its nice and low without. but I do very much love my 172.92:1 total crawl ratio for when I do want it. :grinpimp:
