Midland makes good radios. The 1001z looks like a functional equal to the Uniden 520. My only comment would be the antenna it comes with for $47. That might be the limiting factor and an upgrade might be necessary in the future. I guess it depends on how much you are going to use it. A radio from a known brand for $25 is a good deal.

Just for ducks, Right Channel wants $35 for the same radio, and their prices have been good.

It is hard to recommend CB since about half the club has moved up to 2M rigs but if you have your mind made up then my only recommendation is to get a good mag mount antenna. The best CB mag mount that I know of is the big Wilson 5000 but the Lil Wil gets good reviews too.

Adoption of amateur radio in the 4x4 world is happening at a rapid pace; far faster than I ever dreamed would happen. I have said many times in the past that CB will, unfortunately, be with us for the foreseeable future. I am beginning to think that prediction is wrong and the light is at the end of the tunnel. Time will tell.

It was amazing how many CM participants were using 2M even though CB was required for the first time this year. On the last day I think Dan and Sara and maybe 1 or 2 others were the only ones without 2M. Even the Lizard buggy had 2M! On Cliffhanger, both the trail leader and his gunner had 2M and they communicated frequently.

Greg Lure, the CM trail boss, was very active on the main CM frequency and all the trail leaders were checking in with a status on a fairly regular basis. They had instant communication on trail breakage and other issues on the trail. I only listened to the main CM frequency a few times because I don't have a dual radio like Evan's but the traffic back and forth was frequent.

For the price of a good CB mag mount ($100) and a 4w CB radio ($80), you can get a 5w HT that will blow the doors off any legal CB.

I'll make you a deal Carol. If you will spend your money on an HT and get licensed, I will give you a CB and mag mount for free. How 'bout them apples?

I'll make the same offer to anyone in the club that is planning to buy a CB and can't justify the extra cost a mobile 2M rig. (If more than 4 of you take me up on this then I'll have to start hitting the garage sales again. )

Busted. I don't even have interweb at home, or a GPS on my motorcycle. Shucks, I only bought a laptop for a class I dumped, and the MP3 player is to motivate me to workout at the station (and tune the boys out when they get stoopid).

We should encourage folks to go with the Yaesu brand of HAM radios if possible. HAM radios are so complicated that it'll take all of us to figure out the ins and outs of these things! Also, it's nice to exchange files between compatible radios too!

Beno says that there is a test on July, perhaps aim for that one?

Have any of you contacted Daryl Clutter? He usually does tests in ABQ about once a month. I'll try to listen in on the local nets this week. Sometimes there are announcements for impromptu tests.

What if someone is thinking of going 2M, but alreadly has a mag-mount that sucks . Real question is where is the best place to buy the manuals (I like keeping text books, if you want to know)?

edit: Just re-read the thread, not planning to buy a CB. Already have one, so that takes me out.
