Just pondering what kind of trail rig I might be able to buy for $1,000. I know it's not much but older is better.

There was a 1991 80 series here in Arkansas a while back for a grand. Was trashed though. It's gone. Just to give you a idea.
One that will need some work.
Rolled, burned, eaten by skunks.
Probably one that'll need to be towed (or maybe just limp) home. Then you can expect another $300-$500, if you do the work yourself, to make it reasonably reliable. YMMV, but that was my experience w/ my $900 rig. Two years later, about $2000 total into it, and it runs strong.
Apparently not a 85 mini, ext cab, solid axle, and injection. ha ha ... (sorry.. had to kick a man when he is down).

I sold my FJ62 that was in Good shape and ran like a top after a tuneup and new tires/brakes/starter for 1K last year.

Anything is possible,check craigs list and be prepared to look a long time and have cash in hand and run right over there. MIke

realistically $1000.... you can't get much unless you get super lucky. Maybe a Jeep haha! Check craigslist consistently, and look locally for a diamond in the rough. You looking for a 60? 4 runner? etc?

Can find 40s in New England for $1K.....usually with around 40,000 original miles........and a snow plow. The trucks are usually shot.
A 100 sold in Columbia SC for 1k.
