Just bought an 86 4runner 22re 5speed with hard and soft tops for $1250 (had to put $300 in it to get it running and it still needs an A/C compressor and a rf hub but its drivable in 2wd) Thats about the best deal I could find, and I had cash in hand to talk him down from $1500. Good luck with your own escapade

2nd owner of this FJ62. Bought from original owners in 1996 when it had ~160K miles; we put another 100K on it and it currently stands just short of 263K. Never really been off-road; it's been primarily used as a commuter, family truckster, ski vehicle, and dog transporter.

It's been a good runner for us these past 14(!) years, but we really haven't driven it much at all in the past 3 years. Something went south with the transmission last year; 1st and 2nd gears work fine but it won't drop into reverse or bump up into 3rd. (This is apparently somewhat common for this A440 transmission, as reverse and 3rd gears share a clutch; fixes include transmission flushes and/or seal replacment, but since we're not driving it, I'm not particularly interested in doing it.)

Condition is average to good, for a 1988... everything electrical works, interior is in fine shape, a few spots of surface rust but nothing cancerous. Our add-ons include (from Spector Off-Road) sliding rear cargo-area windows, pet divider, bug deflector, and a three-piece brush bar.

I'd say our FJ62 is very suited to:
1) rebuild... again, it's been sitting, so it would benefit from a thorough refreshing, or
2) use as the body for a project... go ahead and throw that Chevy V8 in it, a diesel, or whatever your 4x4 dream is.

If you're interested, holler at me... it's hard to let it go after all these years, but it's time.
