I don't know much about p/s on 40s as I have never had it on any of mine. This belongs to a family member who asked me to work on it for him. The pump makes alot of noise when you turn the wheel. Plenty of fluid. I think that maybe the pump is bad and is bypassing fluid. Could this pump just be too small? Can anyone tell me what kind of pump it is? Did a search and found alot of saginaw pumps that seem to be popular on LCs but this is alot different.

LOOKS like a oem toyota pump from an old tercel or celica. Has an auxillary tank for the fluid, usually found some place on the fender well.

That pulley looks GMish, and that brass fitting screwed into the pressure port looks like it came from Lowes. I'd still like to know how it mounts.

Agreed. That and the fact that GM often uses a 7 digit code for their parts.

This is how

it is mounted...

About 1/4 in. clearance between radiator bracket and pully

I dont know anything about this pump and bracket, but it looks like a pretty clean install. I put more p/s fluid in and it silenced the pump for a while.
when I shut off the engine the resivoir overflowed and the fluid was foamy. How do you get rid of the air in the sys.? I figure this is the problem

You must have a leak on the suction side...... (cavitation)

Possible (and I'm certainly not ruling that out), but the pump was just out and it doesn't sound like he has all the air out of the system yet.

I'm no PS expert, but I think the first thing to do is jack up the front axle off the ground, start the engine and turn the steering wheel back and forth from lock to lock a few times to circulate the fluid throughout the box with no load on it. If you still have bubbles after that, then look into low side leaks.

See any clamps on the suction hose in the pic?
