Hey guys, this is a great site, and I hope to become a regular if I can find the right rig.

I found this one on craigslist, and was wondering what you guys thought it was worth. From looking at the classifieds on here, it looks like prices vary by region, probably because of availability.

Please let me know what you think.

1978 FJ40 Landcruiser trade for Harley

thanks,
Jim

Here is some more information that I was able to get about it.

The conversion kit was installed professionally. The motor is a rebuild but the head and block was also done professionally. The motor is very strong. The transmission and transfer were built by an off-road shop in Denver. I bought them with the rolling chassis out in Denver. It still needs to be painted but looks good enough as it is for playing around. I was going to just drive it like it is without painting it since I was expecting to actually use it for off-roading. The firewall and inside have been rhino lined. It needs the heater hooked up, seat belts installed, altenator hooked up, and just a few other minor things. It is dirty from just sitting in the garage for awhile, but it is in good shape. I have probably put 20 miles on it around town just like it sits right now.

thanks,

With a v8 conversion, those wheels and diamond plate, 3k MAX! Just remember V8'd 40's are worth pennys on the dollar at best. You should offer $2500 to start. Buy it and have fun with it!

x2.

While $13K was invested in the drivetrain, it still isn't worth much if diamond plate and rhino lining are hiding rust.

Thanks for the responses, I think my bike is worth a little more than that as far as a trade goes. So I think I will keep looking.

The question is, what is it worth to you? I would base my thinking around that. If you want that set up and its done right, I would start w/ 50% of investment cost and go down from there. I think $2500 is low considering motor ect. ect. But check out rig carefully and adjust its value by hidden damage or poor workmanship. with this economy you should get a good deal. Good luck.

Right, I am still planning on looking at it. And I have some of the same concerns as to the hiding rust. But he has actually sent me pictures of the interior before the lining, and it looks good. But I don't know what is under the diamond plate.

But I am glad I found this site before I went and looked at it blindly. You guys have been a huge help.

thanks,

2500 is too low... but body is going to be deciding factor... I dont like v8 conv. but lots do... to say pennies on the $$... well.. I would not say that either... I have seen in person a few that were nothing but top noch jobs.

Look in the Classifieds on here, thats where I got my 40 from.

That is what I was doing all weekend, and that is what got me to question what this one is worth. There is one in Nevada for $8000 that looks really good, and one in Iowa for $6000, that looks like it needs quite a bit of work.

The biggest draw to this one is that he is willing to trade for my harley, and my wife will only allow me to have one toy. And it would be much easier to swap instead of having to sell.

one thing you will learn is some people really think "they got somthing special" so they think that their trucks are worth more than what they actually are.

2,500 is low im my thinking, but if you can get for 500 why not.
I would say just, because he welling to trade it for a bike ,who cares.
Sell your bike ,then look for one. You won't have to think about the wife or the trade in values . Cash is better most of the time.
God luck

Find one that you know can work on yourself, thats half the fun. I waited 5 years until I found one I really wanted. It is better to pay more upfront then have to spend much more over the long run. Something I picked up on this site.

So, I went to look at it this morning. And the pictures don’t really do it justice. And from what little I know about the process from reading on here, it looks like the SOA lift was done right. It has the Saginaw p/s setup. The front end of the frame was rhino lined when the engine swap was done, and the back half looks good, nothing but surface rust. The diamond plate isn’t actually installed, it was just clamped on there. So I was able to see under it, and there is not rust under it. The current owner put it on because the previous owner had cut out the wheel wells to fit bigger tires. The worst rust spot that I could find was on the back, it was a little bigger than a silver dollar, and not all the way through. The cage is very solid, maybe even a little overkill, it makes it hard to get in and out of. But he had rolled his previous one, and spent quite a bit of time in the hospital, so I guess its better to be safe than sorry. He said the only things that needed to be done to make it a dependable driver is to hook up the alternator, it needs an external regulator, and some tuning on the carburetor.

Now that I have seen it, and I really want one, it is hard for me to be objective. I took my bike to the local Harley dealership, and they offered by $7,000 for trade. And I’m sure I can get more if I sold it outright. But do you guys think it is worth at least that?
Thanks for any input.

Jim

Well appearently you can have it for a Harley... The kind of bike he wants can be had for around 5-12k depeding on many things. If it's got a solid body, if it got a solid frame, it the work done is not complete s***e, I would venture to say it's worth at least 4-6k. If the body or frame isn't solid, if the engine and driveline aren't stellar its worth nothing more than a bunch of parts. I would look at it in person with someone who knows these trucks in and out. Only then would I consider it. Other wise I wouldn't look at it twice.

Sounds to me like your Harley is worth $8000+ if the stealership was going to give you $7000 on trade-in. I think you ought to sell your bike now and keep your cash together in order to snatch up a great deal whenever it comes along.

In my humble opinion, his rig is worth $5000-6500 and your rig is worth $7000 - $8500. Sounds like a crummy trade for you:meh:.

motor

The post mentions a new 350, A quick google and I found that they can run 2300-4 or 5k depending on what you get.

so he is probably looking to recoup that plus the basic price of the vehicle.

I think 2500 is low considering the rebuilt engine, tranny, and transfer but since he says it is dirty and needs the alternator hooked up and seats etc---sounds like he is tired of messing with it not to do those little jobs and clean it up a little eh?

room for haggling

A lot of the money is in the drivetrain--- I'd see receipts if I did not know him personally, then decide
