At the risk of being stupid, what does a snorkel do? Isn't the stock air box already higher than the altenator? L.B.

I'm no snorkel expert, but there are multiple reasons. Needless to say it raises the point where your engine gets air, in a lot of ways this is obviously for water crossings (which it's associated with), but is almost just as much for land in some ways too. By getting that intake point up and out of the engine bay, you are getting cooler air which is ideal, but also the air you are getting is cleaner air in the way that it is out and up above more road dust, sand, etc.

There are probably more too, but that should get ya started. Oh, and some also just like the look :hillbilly:

Its main purpose is making your engine breathe cleaner air when the vehicle is used on dusty conditions (Especially effective when dusty, but itll give your engine a longer life anyway, your be amazed at how much cleaner the air it breathes up there is). Secondary, though equally as important, is keeping your engine from breathing water during wading.

I'm calling the water-avoiding-purpose secondary cause youre probably gonna use your vehicle in dusty conditions way more than on deep water, or else youd better be off buying a boat instead of a snorkel lol.

I'll leave you a couple of pictures to make my point.

My wife said mine was it's trunk (like elephant) and the main use I've gotten from it is almost everyone asking "What's that big black thing for?" So apparently it's to get people to ask about it. The seocnd question is "Have you actually used it? Are you going in water that deep?"

I can see that the air it would be a little cleaner and cooler up there, but regarding wate crossings: what keeps the engine electrical system ( altenator, injectors, coil, etc) from shutting down? Thanx for the replys, L.B.

Your distributor and coil may shut the engine down during a river crossing, but I dont believe wet alt or injectors will stop the engine.

Having said that, I think some folks use an upside down milk jug over the distributor/alt.

Your computer is mounted behind the dash, so it should be fine.

For those of us with diesels there is less electrical bits to worry about.

The biggest advantage though is for water crossings, where you should be able to prevent hydrolocking or breaking your engine. Ive been in the water a couple times where the water level was pretty close to my air can, and getting any deeper could have been a disaster. So they're like a seatbelt, you dont generally need them, but when you do...

to look cool x2
