Hi everyone,

I was leaning towards this set up slowly.... but surely.

74 FJ40
SBC
stock 4 speed tranny
stock TC
4:11s coarse pinion
33x12.50x15
aussie locker FF & RR ( 1980 FJ40 Complete front end) longfield super set, aisin hubs
Stock rear axles
2 wheel low mod.

What is the next weak link? For light to moderate trailing,No serious rock crawling....but lets say i did get a little crazy....Your thoughts pls.

looks like fender flares.

probably your pinion..

Steering components...

Nice looking truck, agreed power steering is essential and the type of steering you choose will determine the weak link, knuckles arms etc. also. But if your not wheeling hard why bother to upgrade and spend all the cash for longs etc etc? Moderate wheeling yes to longs and hd steering components. Other wise I'd just run a sag or mini setup.

A "1980 complete front end" would have fine splined pinion....................and 3.73 gears.:hmm:

Just sayin';)

I swapped the pumpkin out of the 74 diffs to keep the 4:11s into the
80 front end....forgot to mention..

I did the mini PS last week,,,,just thought id check with you folks before i move on to the next improvement

I like those doors. Are they stock or where did you purchase them?

more parts on the way to you allan!
George...I appreciate the fast shipping....

I have a few FJ40's. The one I loved driving the most was the bone stock 1977. It was truely fun to drive and went straight down the road.

Are you planning a lift to fit the 33"s?

D'Animal i hear yah...The picture in the posting has the 4" lift installed....:)

Allan,

I'm not saying that you need them desperately but you asked about a possible weak link: Running a V8 with larger tires and lockers, you have the axles covered with the Longfields, but you might eventually have a problem with the coarse spline diff's. It would probably require some serious abuse though.

You already have a fine spline diff from the 1980 axle. You could have your stock gears and locker moved over into the fine spline unit. If you do that you may want to get 4.56 gears and consider an air or electric locker for the front diff. Being able to unlock the front diff when turning tight on high traction surfaces like rock will greatly reduce front end fatigue and make steering easier too. You should be able to pick up another fine spline diff pretty reasonable so you can do both F & R.

the only coarse splines in a 74 cruiser are the pinions, t-case front output flange and t-case front hub/shafts for the 4wd engagement.

the axle shafts in this cruiser are fine spline already and so are the diffy side gears.

Thanks Randy...The Front 80 i got from you is fine spline "Outers"
and Pinion However are 3:70 ....so i had to swap the 74 pumpkin to keep the 4:11 to match the rear...so im back to a coarse spline PINION...the game plan was..... just to get the 80 front end for the disc brake and slightly larger knuckle studs and the knuckle to accomadate the MINI truck superset LONGFIELDS....Im with you on the 4:56" for 33s and when i do that it will be fine spline
(pinions) .....on the front being LOCKED i know the front will PUSH during a turn and alot of stress on the steering components ..I did the 2LOW mod on TC...so i figured i will just disengage from 4lo to 2lo on turns to relieve the stress on the front end...PLUS on the aussie lockers it releases when it differentiates....they say

Correct....

For a SUA
Howdy! With auto lockers in both axles, I find myself shifting in and out of 2 Lo frequently. With V8 power that is a lot of torque on the rear axle if you lean on the skinny pedal in 2 Lo. That is why the factory does not offer this option: too much stress on the rear drive parts. A wrap bar would be cheap and easy insurance that you don't overload your springs and driveshaft parts.
