What is the difference between 97 LX450 and a 80 series? (1 Viewer)

Is the Lexus center console any taller than the LC? Meaning the height you rest your elbow.
It's seems taller to me but I don't have my 80 around right now to compare the two.

My '93 averages 13 mpg with a lot of Hwy. I drive around 70. Highest I've ever seen was 14.2 babying it on the Hwy. 285 tires, uncorrected numbers. My '97 3.4L 3rd gen 4Runner averaged 17 mpg. My '01 4.7L Tundra averaged 17.2 mpg.

Lexus drivers needeth not a taller console, since they rest not their elbow anywhere. 10-2 positioning wrapped in the finest leather gloves is the only way to achieve the true driving experience.

The center console was designed, though, to accommodate picnic basket sized jars of Grey Poupon, which is achieved perfectly.

I have an 80 and a LX and the Lexus center console is definitely higher. It accommodates the subwoofer and cd changer. You can actually rest your arm on the LX without doing a gangsta lean.

Good to know. The top part seems higher to me. Is the base the same hight in both? If so I will swap the tops. I still like my junk holder and extra button slots on the 80.

Exactly...that's why I thought I would ask.

The top portion is the same, the LX base is taller. I'd rather have the change slots and cupholder slot than the subwoofer, but I like the extra height.

I've been playing around with ideas on a spare console I have. No reason a cup holder couldn't be adopted into the grill but since I got my nice new stainless steel double cup holder behind the console, I stopped trying to figure out a solution. The coin slots are utterly useless except for trying to make those I to switch slots. My only gripe with the LX console.

Here's a pick of the consoles side by side. I noticed the LX has a spring loaded hinge on the lid which can be swapped into the 80 series console.

Now thats some funny s***!

Not to thread jack, but it stands to question: how many LX450 owners were searching for an 80, but ended up with a LX? I know two of the reasons why I didn't want to buy an LX were that sound system (really, a 4 watt sub?) ----I didn't want to muck around with it knowing I was going to change it out-------and the ignition key. Isn't the door/ignition key different from an 80 (and when I say different, I mean hella expensive)?

You could always find a key cylinder from a junkyard 80 and get a key made for it. It would probably cost much less to do that than get a new laser-cut key. Or more. I don't know. But it's possible.

I was shopping for an Lx till I found out the plastic junk on the sides has body panel mount holes.... 40th Ann fit my wants better and I'd rather drive around something that says 'land cruiser'.. It's an iconic name that demands respect:D Who the FAWK cared about lx450? Might as well say gs300(poor mans Lexus)

The laser key is $80.00 from the dealer and $40.00 from a lock smith who can cut laser keys. Not a deal breaker to me. (A Land Rover key is $260.00) I found the LX 80's, in MY search, were usually in better condition and often had excellent dealer maintenance. (Not fun to pay for dealer maintenance but great to find a rig well maintained when someone else paid for it.)
Personally, I like the cladding both the way it looks AND the extra winter road muck protection for the mountain conditions where I live. I have no reason to remove it and weld the wholes. (I live 20 minutes from the Rubicon Trial Head but don't plan to take this rig on it.) I use my 80 for an all weather DD/Mountain exploration rig. If you plan to de-flare the truck for a extreme trail rig the cladding wholes would be a consideration. If not, IMO, look for the lowest mileage, best maintained 80 you can find LC or LX. They are both FZ80 / FZJ80s by the way.

Who cares what letters it doesnt or does have on the side? These are meant to be driven, offroaded in, touring in, beaten on. Yours probably cost 3x as much as mine, is exactly the same as capable as mine, and yours probably stays on the pavement more than mine.

Clownin'.

Been thinking up that retort for 8 years?

I doubt his sees much pavement time anymore.

You guys bumped my 8 year old thread back when i was cruiser shopping. All i think is how i wish i could still find a 175,000 mile triple locked truck for $5800.

Just for the record, i went with a clean locked 94 FZJ80 with 182,000 on the clock for a staggering $6200. Not so clean anymore. She is now sitting at 340,000 and taking good care of me. I put almost 20,000 a year on it. Hate to think what i pay in gas and tires.
