Probably a zinc/white metal/ alloy. Commonly refered to as Pot Metal.

I think the early ones are metal (sh*t metal) but I think all my badges are plastic.
Cetainly the "Toyota" on my grille is plastic and so is the "toyota landcruiser" on the "hood side-skirts". (Cos I've had them off very recently for painting work.)

Unfortunately, my only experience is with a '65-'66

The early ones are pot metal (cheap metal) with chrome plating:

Later ones from the square bezel FJ40s are plastic:

The later model plastic ones cost upwards of $65 from various vendors and Toyota.
But the plastic ones are real easy to restore:
- soak in brake fluid for several days to remove the layers of paint (both OEM and PO applied over the years)
- lightly sand the fake chrome plating that was applied over the base plastic
- spray a light coat of primer and then spray a top coat color (rattle can spray paint)

The above was painted all over with a grey metallic top coat (all my truck's silver trim was converted to grey metallic), black paint pen was used between the letters, silver paint pen used to outline the letters, and then covered with several layers of spray clear coat.
Cost = my time and ~$1 of brake fluid (already had the spray paints and borrowed paint pens from wife)![]()
