what is a '71 fj40 worth? Quick response, please!!!

So I'm actually a 60 series owner but have come across what I think is a sweet deal on a 71 fj40. What is this thing worth to ya'll?
The only rust is on the lower back two corners (holes all the way through) but other than that it is awesome. Frame is rust free and it appears that the rest of the body is also. I climbed under the cruiser and looked for rust. Looks clean, body and all.
It is stock and appears to be all original. Looks like it sat in a barn for a long time although all the paint is rather faded.
The interior has no rust either. Floor looks good. I just don't really know what else to look for. I imagine that it will need a new engine someday but the owner said that it runs and drives and 4x4 works. Other than that, what do you guys think. I want to buy it tonight or in the next hour or two, so that I don't miss an opportunity.

hmmm, no pics for us to look at? That would help.

But, if it's been sitting for a long time, you'll have to sink some cash into it to work out the mechanicals. were you able to test drive it? The rust in the rear doesn't scare me, especially if it has never been repainted.

Without seeing it, or driving it, I would say a range of $1200 - $2500.

I havn't been able to drive it yet. He says that the battery is dead but that it does run and drive. Thanks guys.

Don't take the seller's word for anything relating to what works and doesn't work. Not saying the seller isn't honest but before you drop the $$ make sure stuff works. Take a battery with you for a test drive or try to jump start the rig. If the battery is dead then when was it last driven? Maybe it ran fine 6 months ago...

Anyway, sounds like a nice find based on the description and of course depending on what the seller is asking for it. You are going to have to plunk down a fair amount of $$ and time (or even more $$) just getting everything baselined and replacing 36 year old piece parts that need to be replaced.

Well, the owner said he'd take $1600 cash. I'm really working my brother to buy it and get him into 4 wheeling again because he sold his wheeler a while back. But to get it offroad worthy, I think it would be some serious time and money. If I was to buy it, I already have my 60 going pretty strong, so I think the 40 would sit in my driveway for a long time or I'd just resell it, if ya'll think that it was possible.
I'm not really into reselling vehicles, especially because I like landcruisers so much. I just don't think that I would have the time and devotion to build two cruisers at once. I guess it just sounds like a good deal to me and don't know if I should pass it up.

Did you drive it? Offer him less. see what happens. $1500 or so isn't bad at all for a driveable 40. You could always advertise it in the northeast. Those guys have really bad rust problems. One that has mild rust would be a big hit up there.

Figure that it's going to need all new tires, brakes, master cylinders, clutch slave cylinder, flex lines, hoses, seals and gaskets, filters, a tune up, carb rebuild, and the radiator rodded out to get it safely on the road.

This is a couple thousand worth of parts and more than a few weekends of work. Of course it's worth it...

If it starts and drives I'd go for it, actually I did with a '65 in worse body condition. Rust never sleeps.

See if you can find a local 40 expert or have it inspected by a shop specializing in the 40, then you'll have a better idea what kind of repair$ you are looking at and what they might cost.
