My folks are in town and we took my Cruiser up to Hyalite last weekend with a bunch of fresh snow. The trip was all well and good until I got back down to the valley and just as we were about to leave the canyon things got real steamy under the hood and after killing the engine and jumping out a lake of coolant was forming up underneath. The block heater was spewing fluid so the "this old truck" journey continues. I'm SOOOOO glad it failed down low rather than somewhere up on the single-lane of the canyon! A quick call to my friend Mason and we taxi'd my family back home and Mason and I grabbed my work flatbed and retrieved my Cruiser with Mason's Chevy.

Changing inner and outer tie rods on the '14 Tacoma. They were floppy as a well cooked noddle (and giving me noises).

Looking for opinions: any chance the grease/goo on my steering rack ends is all from the inner ball joint and not a leaking seal on the rack itself???
Its hard to tell, but the grease on the inner joint was well broken down and loosing viscosity. The collecting grease under the steering rack end does look similar in color and consistency as the inner ball joint. (Pic is of my driver side)

(PS, @samh, sorry your 62 ran into issues, but glad it worked out to be manageable)

On a Toyota hydraulic power steering system it depends if the fluid has ever been changed over to Dexron III. Originally it is clear hydraulic fluid and then most top off with Dexron or change it to Dexron. See what color you have and see if it matches what you're seeing. Usually if you have a big enough leak the bellows will be wet.

I am now feeling confident that it is not leaking. The PS fluid must be the original as it is clear, and that is not what I was seeing at the rack. Plus, I have never had to top it off in the many years I have owned it and it is sitting at the proper level. I got it all put together yesterday but was disheartened as I still get play and clunking sound when I push the the tires at the 3 o'clock and 9 o-clock. I haven't decerned if it is coming from the rack or my intermediate shaft somewhere (Tacomas are apparently notorious for developing play in the intermediate shaft). Thanks @thetoyotaman!

I’ve replaced the intermediate shafts in all our Tacomas. They get a distinct clunk / tick. There is a plate that the shaft goes through. It has a seal and I replace those at the same time. Shaft has to be out to replace it. And when shaft is bouncing around it ruins the seal.

Wiper arm upgrade. I have plenty 80 arms lying around. They fit nice and scrape way better. Looking at my 3rd gen runner they may fit better but I scraped all my 3rd gen / early taco stuff. Definitely a worth while easy fix.

They would fit. But passenger side will be long. Still works but will hang off the curve of glass a bit. I’ve got 3rd gen runner ones on my 60s.

Definitely have more spring in them. Next 3rd gen I get I’ll swap the arms on the 1st gen runner for. But they are much better for now. For whatever reason just one of things I threw them all away. But another reason I should buy a couple rigs. I need the wiper arms.

I am pretty confident my Taco intermediate shaft that has this bad "knuckle" area and will need replaced. But I am still thinking I also have a bad rack (I kinda think I even know when I damaged the rack ). And good intel on the wipers, i will look into that in the near future for the runner.

2 projects going on, super duty axles going under the tundra and rebuilding a 205 then adding a magnum box and installing them into Sam’s pu by Saturday night

Rear axle for the tundra is ready to install, notice the staking to retain the pins in the arb locker. Highly recommend. Sam’s 205 with the magnum box is waiting on 1 part then it’ll be bolted up . Measure for driveshafts then it’ll be ready for their trip to moab and beyond

Got a freshly rebuilt 11mm injection pump from Poland. Just need to find a weekend to swap out my leaky 10mm pump.
