im in the market for a winch and saw a few warn 8274 on craigslist for $550-800 range. what should i be looking for before i pull out cash? also does the 8274 have a power out? thanks winch 1st timer.

You want to make sure it's all there and works for that kind of money, ideally you'd like to see in the case to see what kind of shape he gears are in. Usually that's not possible buying a used winch, so make sure it powers out and in and will free spool. This will tell you some about the solenoid pack, clutch, brake and at least the gears are spinning ;-). Also look for 5-pin vs 4-pin controller connection, always easier to get parts for the newer winches ... the older is fine but you're going to want the controller ;-)

Well they're more than twice that new, but for that kind of money I would expect no rust anywhere, nice and clean and in good working order when hooked up to a battery. I bought mine (working but with some rusty bits) 3 years ago for $200 IIRC.

Here are pics of my $500 CL buy, guy was asking more but did not want to hassle with shipping so I think I got lucky. Otherwise I was going to look for an older one that needed TLC and try to get it real cheap.

3 fasteners (mine has hex head cap screws and square captive backing nuts) and the top assembly comes off, so if you're serious about buying it they should let you crack it open. You just need to reseal it.
