Just finished swapping out my old rear diff centre. Never done it before, and haven't yet driven it, so possibly still never done it.....properly.
Test drive went fine. Will recheck all the bolts and look for leaks tomorrow after a bit of driving, but so far all feels and sounds fine.

Surprisingly straightforward - a few videos helped, but I pretty much had it down anyway.
Took it slowly, partly because I have limited time, but one day to take it apart, clean up the surfaces, buy a gasket...... yep didn't even think about that, but a shop nearby had one on the shelf so no problem.
Then I had to wait until the next afternoon to get back to it. Put it back together, then it was time for dinner.
Next morning filled it with oil, then test drive, then wife wanted to go for a drive in it, so we went down the road a bit.
It is probably mostly in my head, but it feels tighter and smoother than it has for a long time. Most likely it is just the satisfaction of getting something done to it.
Now I have some LED headlights to fit, and my "sound system - decided to go with the little amp unit I have and a Tablet 10"
Good value from my birthday money this year, and all spent on the cruiser.
And for anyone wondering - if I can do this on my driveway, pretty much anyone can, so don't be afraid of it.
Added some rallye 3000 euro beam. Mainly for the old school cool covers. They're also massive. Then drove it to work.
Would suggest calling and talking with the guys at Susquehanna Motorsports. They're really helpful. My setup is for an 89 62. The harness switched ground, so everything continues to work without need for modification. Here's what I went with:
- Switched Ground Harness - HL28202FJ62
- Headlamps - Hella 003177001 165mm Rectangular ECE Hi-Lo H4 Conversion Headlamp Kit
- H4 bulbs - Hella hi/lo for all four. I don't have the part number.
Again, would suggest talking through with them first. Have been very happy with it all so far. Install was super easy as well. Just cleaned the contacts and plugged the new harness into the existing passenger low socket. Relays were pretty tight fit on mine, so didn't have a good place to install a panel. For now, I have just tucked them in and zip tied to keep clean.
My wife decided to use the map pocket as a foot rest and then boosted herself off it while wearing #beanboots (
) so I took the opportunity to do two other projects involving the door. Added sound/heat insulation from Noico and wired in two relays so the window moves faster than molasses. the label maker even got in on the fun.
the relays made a huge difference. Three more doors to go. The driver door already has relays for that window but you can add relays to help the central door lock switch.

Drove around OC with another weirdo, ate burgers and drank beer. My 35s felt inferior to 39s.

Well, not to the 60 but WITH the 60.
After replacing the rear diff centre as mentioned above, I had to do a run from Perth to Albany, about 450km (280ish miles), and then back the long way - about 600km (370ish miles). So all up abotu 1000km over two days, the majority was at 100kph or 60 mph, so I guess the new diff centre install was a success .....
All good road driving but it did just fine.
The only exception was after the overnight stop, at about 5.30 in the morning when we woke up, we went for a quick spin through some sand tracks onto a very soft little bit of beach. Ended up dropping to 16psi before we got out.
I have a good compressor, but I am too lazy to let the tyres down before I go...... really need to work on that.

Well, I ordered new OEM FJ40 wheels and caps, a valve cover gasket, a pushrod cover gasket, a timing cover gasket and crank seal, and an oil pan gasket.
The only thing it needs is the pushrod cover gasket and either the timing cover gasket or crank seal, but I like to party.
It’s funny, the parts guy I always go to was like, “surprisingly, all these old ass parts are in the local warehouse and will be here Tuesday” lol.
