Few more hours of work today on the SOA. Welded on the front shackle hangers. To protect the rubber bushing from spray paint I used a 2” PVC pipe to cover it.

Welding on the front spring hanger on the inside of frame was fun. Only was to see as I was welding was to reach across under the bell housing.

Removed all the Ruff Stuff hardware and painted it up with Krylon colormax primer/ paint. Pressure washed the Chevy 63 leaf springs.

Made and welded overload plates to the rear FJ80 axle to prevent the overload in the spring pack from twisting.

Getting closer... one step at a time.

How do you like those frontrunner boxes? Ive heard mixed reviews but was thinking about getting some.

They are not weatherproof. That’s my gripe.

Cheapo plastic ones like the wood is in from Bass Pro are better

How do you like your roof top tent. I like the hardshell design. Have any pictures of it setup?

Love it!
Only had it a few months, but have wanted one for a long time and am not disappointed. Sets up in literally 5 minutes, quiet on the road, bed's made when you get there! Posted a picture today in the 60-series porn thread. But here's another!

Ow those tents just need a small wood stove and that’d be too cool.

It was so much fun. I voted then got outta dodge to do some hunting for the rest of the week. Stared at the fire and the stars and forgot all about the crazy world. Snowed almost every day and was knee deep powder by the time I left. Some sign, no animals but I was OK with that.

Had a little propane heater in the tent that I ran before bed and before getting up to take the chill off. Clear sky a couple nights and I guess it was in the teens but I was suprised how warm it stayed in the tent. Want to get the winter hood for it eventually.

Believe me I have thought about a wood stove! But I think a 12v blanket sounds like the ticket. Only problem so far is condensation under the mattress.

Can't wait to go again.

Seriously that looks like the bomb. All I can do is live vicariously through lucky folks like you! Condensation under the mattress... could you use a different type of foundation under it? A waffle weave something or other or even wool?

I kinda poo pooed the condensation issue before I bought it but damn if it doesn't happen. I think the propane heat is mostly to blame. But yes there are mats to combat it. Kinda blew the budget on the tent tho so it's gotta wait. Might try a wool blanket under, never thought of that.

You can go way cheap and pick up some old wool sweaters at a Goodwill and chop the arms off, open up the body and sew them together. If you wash the sweaters and dry they shrink and thicken (it called felted) into much more dense version. You might need more than the number you started w/ tho, 4 instead of 2. What size are the beds in those? Is your body stretched out? I’ve actually never looked inside one setup.

Well look at you. Not only a grease monkey but seamstress to boot. I think that’s what you call it?...right o_O?

Mattress is 6' by 53" I think pretty big. I have a surplus Israeli blanket I'm using on top that is almost perfect. But I was gonna hit up goodwill for a SS bottle to make into a compressed air gear oil pumpkin filler ( discussed here before) so I'll see what they got.

@Hojack I looked at that tepui you linked in your thread. Cool concept. I'm sure you would love it.

It was on sale during the Black Friday weekend. It was $400 off but shipping was $350... what??? You’d think spending almost $2500 there would be free shipping.

Typical black Friday bait n switch! Free shipping after Xmas...

I found a good deal on lightly used unit, semi locally. No dealers near you? I thought rei was a dealer?

Price of these seems high for what you get, a fiberglass box with some fabric attached. But it makes camping so easy I'm sure I'll go out weekends i might have skiped, just for fun because it's so easy to load up a few things and go.

Yeah you can say I’m a jill of all trades. I refurb wool sweaters into skirts for me, (in the past) diaper covers and kids sweaters and pants. I’m highly crafty at making various useful items from other items.

Not a lot of fun pulling this out. Luckily I had Michael Hein's (West Coast Cruisers) assistance. Under the blue tarp is the new, old engine that I hope to get back in there soon.
