Based on the results of several of the last Bringatrailer auctions it looks like Freeborn red is more of a greener color:

Color popularity seems to be Red, Tan/white/silver, blue, brown.

Hi George, I am in Squamish and thinking about painting my heavily patina'd Freeborn Red BJ60. I started the pandemic with repairing a few rust holes and adding a rear door sill (tailgate was screwed into 4"x4" wood). I was hoping to get away with covering the repairs with two large cans from Roberts Paint Care to touch up only the repairs however I am leaning towards a full respray now that my BJ is partly fresh 309 paint and partly 38 year old 309.

How did you get the Canadian Body shop paint and how did it work out?

I just went to CBS on Boundary in Burnaby, and starting asking some questions. The guys were super helpful, and worked with me to match my existing colour.

I went with the Nason fast-dry enamel, single stage. Probably not the best paint, but I was only doing under the hood - firewall, fenders and rad support. It worked out fine. The stuff is easy to use, just reduce and spray. Dried fast. I didn't wet sand and buff as it looked pretty damn good for where it was. Cost me $89/litre as I recall.

Not sure how it would hold up over time, and being red it might need waxing regularly to keep the oxidation down. But it would be a whole lot better than rattle can. If you go this route, let me know how it works out.

Thanks George that is great info. I will let you know what I end up with.

Hi, After having two shops paint parts of my 1987 red fj60 and screw it up. The paint turns pink because they used a cheap clear coat which starts unbonding from the paint within months. Whatever you do do not put a cheap clear coat on. I paid a hefty price and got poor work. Mike

I'm in the same boat right now with almost identical issues - went from minor rust to a full repaint. For reference, one gallon of quality freeborn red paint set me back $1480.00

What brand was this? One day I'll get my truck professionally repainted. A proper 'windows out' job. And I expect this to set me back a good amount of money. Good paint is pricey, but so is labour. I can't imagine going all-out on body and prep, and then trying to save on the paint.

This is a very interesting thread. I have a 1981 BJ44 and just replaced one of the steps/running boards. I had my friend paint it at his shop, and I simply told him "it's a '81 in freeborn red". My firewall tag is paint code 309. The two colors and their difference look like what you have on that firewall picture.

I didn't think I would care but I really do like the 3F4 more, so I'm lucky my original paint trends more towards that. The other color is too bright and "show car" like in my opinion.

I'll find out what's going on for sure if I ever need any major painting done.

Ck this out @kelly saad 2 different Freeborn Reds
WAY old thread, but I just ran across this same issue. Apparently, "Freeborn Red" is not necessarily "Freeborn Red." Your truck looks more like 3F4 red, not 309 red. The tag on your firewall should say for sure.

I always thought all reds on Land Cruisers were "Freeborn Red." While I guess they could have used the same name, there were at least 2 different shades of red on the 6x models: 309 and 3F4. ToyotaReference.com / ImportArchive.com says that only FJ62s had 3F4, my '86 FJ60 has a 3F4 firewall tag.....and it's definitely not the 309 red in the paint can above. In fact, it's exactly the same color as my '88 FJ62 (See photos below)

What's funny is that most people commenting on the red trucks, including myself, say that it's not their first choice, but they've learned to love it, or at least live with it. And yet it seems to be the one colour that commands the most $$ on auctions/sales. I guess some people really do love 'em!

From what I gather, most of the 60's running around have the later 3F4 Freeborn, and the earlier 40's have the 309 Freeborn.
