So I was up in Vancouver, BC this past weekend, and since I'm in the market for an FZJ80, I've been having a sharp eye for spotting Land Cruisers. While walking around checking out the Olympic scene I came across this truck parked in a parking lot.

What kind of engine is in it? How would a comparable setup FZJ80 compare in its off road capabilities? I'm guessing this is a model that was never sold in the US, right?

Anyway, the short time I've been a member here, I got the impression people enjoy looking at nice rigs. I think this is a nice rig, even though I don't know much about it. I just thought I'd share.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I also saw a VX Limited parked on the street. I should have snapped a picture of that one too. It was really nice. Then later on that evening, I saw it drive by. It was heavenly to hear that diesel roar as it accelerated by us. I think I've been bit by the Land Cruiser bug. And my wife thinks my gun hobby is expensive...

Cheers.

well theres some that use the 3B motors and some that use the 2L motor, the one we all love to hate. damn that sure is a nice cruiser though. there have been some minty HZJ78s for sale, and they're pricey. damn sexy, but $$$$.

I like that model, but IMO they are not as capable off-road as the 80 series.

I'd take an HDJ80/81 over that, but I'm biased... :flipoff2:

Those are sweet A$$, but not quite as refined as the 80.

They are not nearly as comfortable as a 80, but I can tell they are unbeliveable off road, as tough or tougher as the 80 (except the ones with VM motors), excellent suspension travel, great torque in most engines.

It depens on the model, but for northern spanish off road, they are much more capable than the 80, specially the SWB models, they are lighter, narrower and shorter.

See what I mean this is a typical 4wd track 50 minutes from my house:

YouTube - misuasturify's Channel

I did it with a Suzuki and the 80 is just too wide, a 70 series would fit much better, specially a SWB.

Of course for expedition use the 80 exceeds them by far, as they are noisy, not very comfortable (leaf springs) the road manners are much worse also and they are not fast vehicles.

In Spain we have many of them, BJ70, KZJ70, HZJ70, LJ70, and then 70, 73, 76 and more body variables.

I wish one day I have the money to get a soft top SWB 70 series and drop a 1HD-T in it.

I will not agree with you on that. The reason is that the 80's have TOOOOOOOOOO many electronic components. 70 series can take much more punisment than an 80. They don't look as nice, ride as nice, but to me they can take more than an 80 in any day. I have a 2009 HJZ76 right now and I love that truck. Only thing is that the non-turbo engine does not have as much power as a petrol, but an FZJ76............. Any day. Now if you get a FZJ70........ that's it brother.... That is unstopable.

Here's a pic of the HZJ76:

I think Thta could be a Kzj77 or a PZJ77. bue Im pretty sure its a 77

it is a PZJ or HZJ 77 sweeeet Cruiser .. should be nice just pull the engine and swap in a 1HD-T then pull axles suspension and fit a 80 series axles suspension ..

well .. back to reality .. nice Cruiser .. :D

As people are saying it is a 70 series. Don't confuse if with the Land Cruiser Prado. There is a lot of those roaming the streets. Stay away from buying one of those. They are not a "real" Land Cruiser and not nearly as tough.

I've only owned my Japanese spec cruiser for a year so I'm not an expert but in my opinion the 81 is as tough as the 70 series. The 70 series is just more utilitarian. The 80 is more refined and has more creature comforts like Cruise control and all that jazz. Really nice to drive. And its basically the toughest thing on the road. Just be prepared for the "Nice 4 Runner" comments!!!

Pretty sure that would be an HZJ77. I love the 70 series...but I'm more partial to the Troopie than that one.

this 77 and the newer 76 are just pure beauty .. love the 4 doors in a 70 face and body ..:D I just can't imagine the sound of 2.5" straight pipes in the VDJ76 .. :D

People always say 80 series, or 100 series, or 200 series, or... have "too many electronics". I have never had any problem with "electronics" on an 80, except 10 year old spark plug wires (every petrol engine will face that), and starter contacts (again, every engine will face that). If my windows or radio stop working, it won't make me walk home, if there is a problem with an engine sensor, it will go to "limp/safe" mode, and still run just fine. "Electronics" is a non-issue, IMHO.

The beauty of the earlier diesels is exactly that...simplicity over all the crap that is in a gas engine. No ignition stuff to troubleshoot when things start to not run well, no emissions control/smog to worry about, and everything is heavy duty.

Hey ezterra,

Was it my HDJ81 that you saw? I was down for the Olympic until today. Put a 3500km round trip on my new rig and I saw the same Cruiser as you. I took a pic as well :) Personally, I like the 70 series as long as it has the big turbo diesel.

Cheers.

You could always intall full flex leaf springs, I've heard they are as comfortable as coil springs.

Anyway, I've seen several 70 series SWB with coil springs from stock, I don't know the exact models, but at least the LJ70 has coil springs.

I've seen some 70 series trucks in the Funrace4x4 do some amazing things. Tuff as nails!
