What can I remove from my engine bay to clean it up.

Long time lurker here and have been very grateful of many of the informative posts. Currently have a 200, 100 and FJ and had a crusty 80 in the past. So I'm not new to to land cruisers but this if my first 60... and first toyota Carbed engine. 1984 Manual in faded blue

She is a little crusty but will make a fun play rig for now.

It has been desmogged. Some of the items are removed, smog pump is gone with just a pulley there now. What I'm wanting to do is remove more of the items, capped off hoses ect to clean up the engine bay a bit. I will be removing the headlight washer tank and anything else that I can. On the 2 pictures below can someone identify the 3 items.

Item 1 I don't see in any other pictures of 2f engines. It has a wire harness going in the back and a cover with some switches inside.

Item 2 i see most still have. I believe this is the Charcoal canister for the fuel tank correct? Can I cap it and remove it?

Item 3 on the drivers side appears to be a fan unit... but it is unplugged. What is this fan for?

Is there anything else I can remove? On a properly/fully desmogged engine how many hoses should remain? This I can likely figure out with reading the desmog chronicles... but if someone knows off the top of their head "6 to the carb and the rest are plugged" I'll take that;-)

Truck seems to run ok... could use some carb love for sure.

Thanks all

This is not mine and I've never figured out whose truck it belongs to but I came across the photo and saved it for reference.

Before you start removing anything I'd say clean your engine bay first and that alone will be a world of difference based on how dirty and oily it looks in there

Lol yes.. it could use a good cleaning... I think i'm just a few wet wipes away from the pic you sent:-) Just got it home last week. Had to replace the starter and while easy... it would have been easier without the rats nest of of hoses, easier to clean without the hoses as well.

Thanks

get rid of the headlight washer tank and leave everything else. Otherwise might as well remove battery, alternator, that pesky power steering pump and the annoying radiator

Some inspiration:

Otherwise full desmog, headlight washer, a/c removal. Depends what you really need. The barebones trucks you can use as inspiration are the Middle East and Australia base model 2F. That is as simple as it comes, while keeping to the original intent and design.

1. Not100% sure but looks like a cruise control module, do you have CC?
2. Charcoal canister...serves a purpose, good to keep it, does not directly effect the motor
3. Carb cooling fan, get it working and keep it.

As mentioned, clean it up before you clean it out. Maybe drive it awhile and get to know it before stripping it.
Whatever you do pull, do not throw it away, offer ($) it up for someone to use on their rig.

So not the most recent pic of mine but you can remove a lot of crap. Charcoal canister can go, the fan that cools the carb might be able to go (I am Weber so bye), and you have 50+ vacuum lines that you can say bye to, for the most part. I also removed the heater under my seat (Texas) so rerouted those since this pic was taken. Make sure you know what you are removing. There are plenty of write ups on a desmog.

Thanks Mattressking. I did go through that thread before posting. That is where I didn't see the Item 1 in anyones truck... still wondering what that is.

That would be the goal... to get to bare bones as possible. Do you know if the Austrailian/Mid East trucks use the same carb... or are they different? I guess i just need to figure out with a full desmogg what needs to remain for the carb to function properly and then ditch the rest

Thank you Skniper!! you may be right on on the cruise control. I'll follow the wires and see. I haven't tried it when driving so don't know if the cruise works but did see the controls.

This should get me going in the right direction. I'll see if the Carb fan works or not before pulling.

Cheers

Thanks John, Nice looking setup. Gonna try and stick with the stock carb as long as it is working well. Time will tell. Looking forward to getting rid of some hoses. I know I'm safe on anything that is just capped off... at least I can cap the hose closer to the source.

Mine doesn’t have a carburetor so I’m not in the know but believe the fan is beneficial for OEM carb function.

My EFI has the same fan, not sure if it’s needed or it’s just a carry over from the old design, but I like it, it pushes a lot of air when the motor is heat soaking/sinking...whatever the word is.

Second on the cruise control canister, my '84 has one in a similar location. There's also some vacuum spaghetti and another can tucked above the steering column. Leave the carb fan (your item 3) if it's working, also consider replacing the air intake hose from the air cleaner horn to the rad support or fender inner panel.

Personally, I'd pull out everything. Paint the firewall, inner fenders and radiator support. Then I'd put one of these back in. :) Just one man's opinion

Thanks All. Note that I just got this truck and it came desmogged... I'm mainly looking at the 3 item identification, got that!! thank you, thank you!! After that I was wondering how to clean up the rest of the spaghetti of hoses that may or may not be still needed.

The last desmog question on how many hoses are needed was just if anyone knew off the top of their head or maybe had a picture of I have browsed many topics and have downloaded the "How to Desmog an FJ60" 24 page paper (great resources here) but when things are already missing / disconnected it's sometimes harder to know what each is or was.

I will continue to do my research and will for sure post up anything I do remove for other Mud members to have if needed.

Cheers

Maybe in the future... but likely not in this body. Once I get it cleaned up I may feel differently.

worthwhile to consider, but those guys were removing functional and current emissions equipment in a very high-profile way. Compared to some guy who has a 35-year-old truck that probably looks more correct and maybe even runs cleaner without the 35-year-old OE smog hardware. I'm a strong supporter of clean air legislation in multiple forms but think enforcement on a FJ60 is a little misguided.
