Both.
The OEM is more of a foam with some rubber like properties while the after market is far more rubber like. The OEM version compresses much much better...the door actaully fully closes without having slam it shut.
Adhesion was another issue. After pulling it off the door I could put it in a box and sell it as new...this after using the recommended 3M super black.

Interesting, there's a post over on the 40 section where someone else is running into this, but everyone prior had given rave reviews over his weather stripping - I wonder if something changed at his manufacturer. I'm sure even the rubber would compress and make closing the doors easier in the long run, but the adhesion thing is puzzling. I will say if the use a silicone mold release agent when forming the rubber, this can be a true nightmare to get off. I sell $70,000 IR Spectrometers to hose/gasket/O-ring makers to look for residual silicone for exactly this reason. You'd be surprised by how much cleaning doesn't remove, and how badly it can screw up adhesion of paints and glues. Usually an alcohol, something like ethanol/isopropanol will get enough of it off but it can take a couple of scrubs.

I ordered new weatherstripping from cityracer last year for front and rear doors and have been nothing but thrilled!!! I couldn’t pull the weather stripping off with a pliers (I tried to reset a corner the following day). I will say, I followed the directions word for word and scrubbed the weeeee out of the rubber with alcohol before using the satanic glue (3m black).

Have you reached out to cityracer to let them know? They seem very responsive, reactive, and supportive of our LC community. It would be interesting to see if they recently changed formulas, suppliers, etc. At least give them the chance to make it right?

I do feel bad for ya... this job sucks and I wouldn’t want to have to do it over again!!!

here is the current 40 thread regarding similar experience...

Had to abandon the city racer weather strip on the drivers side door. He makes good repops of hard to find soft parts, and i have given him a ton of money.....but these missed the mark. So back to OEM I went.
I really do not like gluing weather strip. This good around I used an acid brush to paint the adhesive on, that worked so much better.

No haven't reached out...not mad or anything.
Followed the recommendations for installation.

I'm sure even the rubber would compress and make closing the doors easier in the long run,

so the deal is.. i used oem gaskets when i put a set of doors on it 4-5 years ago, and got spoiled with them. the slightest tap would send the door completely home without a slam. when i got these doors(original to the tub) ready i cheeped out(150ish per aftermarket pair vs 150ish each for oem) due to quitting my job being on the very foreseeable horizon and going in on the partnership at the new place with uncertain paychecks(which was an unfounded fear). the passenger side door has been on roughly a year give or take.....it is only now getting to the point were it can be fully closed without going hulk on it. i actually had to trim some off the drivers(front side along the slight bend in the middle) side to get it partially closed. i had the hinges and striker all the way out and could still see the door deflecting along the window channel as i pulled it shut....warm days were worse than cold ones. when the seal was cold it would stay compressed longer, when warm it would spring out to its original thickness.
when it got to the point it was falling off the door, that was it...game over. the door came off, i had to wire wheel the adhesive off the door, then repaint it.

Got around to giving the FJ some love last night. Replaced my almost worn out ko2’s with some duratrac’s. I had good luck with the bfg’s and would have no problem recommending them. I got damn near 5 years and almost 70k out of them, and they wore nice and flat.

I wanted something more aggressive so it was between duratracs and Nitto ridge grapplers. The nittos were almost $50/per tire more (that’s at my wholesale pricing too!) so it was a no brainer. Only one night on them so far, but I’ll report back once I get some weather/dirt on them.

Next up is both inner tie rods, all 4 front lower control arm bushings, and give the frame some paint/protection.

Almost done using my Cruiser as a farm vehicle for the season. Hard to pass up free wood.

My friend's idea of "small tree" is apparently 24" diameter logs. I bucked them down to 20-22" rounds.

Hillbilly rig using motorcycle ramp to roll them in since my son's school and social schedule isn't allowing him to be available to help.

At least the view is nice.

Loaded up and back to the house (it was packed solid, 2 smaller logs just below the tailgate). Will need 1 more trip tomorrow to get the last of it.

@Cass007 I have a bunch of wood from a couple trees i dropped last weekend. It's pine, not sure if it matters if you are burning it in your outdoor furnace. Its already bucked just needs to be loaded and carted away.

Thanks Blair, but the transport cost would be a killer. Plus, the pine usually leaves a heavy creosote deposit so I try to stick to hardwoods and an occasional poplar.

Damn, nice job Aaron!

That would have gone straight in the scrap bin here.

Oh I know how you roll and that's where it should have gone 👍

Funny thing is, it doesn't even fit anything I have 🤣
Was just practicing, probably watching too much #ColdWarMotors

spring has sprung sorta and I spent part of yesterday removing the cobwebs from my E30. All it needed was a new battery (old duralast from 2011 died) and she fired up without any drama. Love that car! She desperately needs paint but for now, I'm happy to continue to drive as is.

Rob,

Since you’re an E30 guy I thought you might appreciate my buddy’s project - he’s almost ready to test fire.

He’s had this E30 since high school, this will be the third engine. Stock was replaced by a turbo’d E35 V6, that blew up last year so now he’s going LS mated with a 350Z manual transmission.

That thing is going to be a blast! Thanks for sharing it!

I've been tempted to LS swap mine but I am a bit of a sadist and have started collecting parts to build a high compression stroker version on the stock M20 engine with stand alone engine management and ITBs. Should be fun if and when I get it built.

What's an e35?

I would love to know if there is now an adapter kit for the 350Z CD009 manual trans. I would love to ditch the T56 and get back to the buttery 350Z trans.
