Maybe this has been done before, but here is my solution:

Since the grille has a slight curve to it, I mounted neoprene washers between the RAM tough track and the grille at the outermost bolts. Deadens any vibration and keeps the part from deforming when the screws are tightened down. This grille already has some decent vibration and sound deadening features. I had wanted to mount an iPad from it as well, but that would likely be asking too much from the grille.

Pro clip base with a quad lock charging mount.

This is the answer. A little pricier, but hands down the best way.

Not for me.

Mine is a custom one that I made years ago with a magnet. I've since converted it to a MagSafe, works really well for me.

Quick photo of mine today:

Small plate of 14 ga steel with a single screw and some 3M VHB holds it secure. I installed a second USB charging port (blue glow) behind in that cavity, it is switched but fused from the second battery, so I can charge the phone even with the ignition off. The little red glow you see behind is the control switch for the Blue Sea ML-ACR managing the batteries. Yeah, it's pretty crowded under there, with the head for the 2M radio.

Same. And no blocked vents. Phone easily swivels between landscape and portrait.

I went with a ram mount that attaches to the seat bolt on the floor. 18" arm and added the Ram mount that uses the Apple magsafe adapter. Mostly not annoying, though it blocks the volume knob on my 2013.

I posted this in another phone mount thread. It is working out great. It is close to the vent, but high enough that you have the option to have the vent aim directly at the phone to help cool the phone down if needed or aim the vent down and hit you. It does use the Peak Design magnetic charging mount, so you need their case and it works great. The magnet is secure. For those who need a more secure mount, Peak Design also has a snap in locking version if needed - magnetic and locking work on the same Peak Design phone case.
