What are real-world results from Supercharging? (2 Viewers)

I don't have a SC, yet - but I liked the feedback from one mud member who said something like, "with the SC, I don't so much notice the truck being fast as I notice that it isn't slow..." IIRC, he had also done a top end, etc. That's good enough for me, but I also got excited after replacing the o2 sensors.

My understanding is that there ARE rebuilt units still to be had, but I thought I had read somewhere that the intake portion was difficult to find? Someone please confirm.

I'm very interested in your findings, if you decide to do it. I plan to do this to mine someday.
 
I have not dyno'd because my truck isn't running optimally. I have a knock sensor issue which messes with fuel delivery, I'm still overheating, I haven't changed my speedo to match tired so it affects shifting, etc etc. I'll only waste the time and money on the dyno when that's done. I have other fish to fry.

The actual supercharger itself can be had from various vendors, but the custom cast pieces (intake plenum, throttle body adapter, intake runner) and some other parts are not available as far as I know. Realistically, you need to find a used kit or you're going to be building a custom setup.

Ok muddy. You were headed to page two with no responses so I tried to help with what answers I could provide. I don't race or time or dyno my truck so I have no numbers/data for you. Was not and never will be its intended purpose. I've built it as I see fit to go out and use it as it was designed and remain reliable. Sure, i am curious but would rather spend that money on tires and gas to go explore than know how fast I can get to 60 or how many HP I really have. Maybe I misread the ? you mentioned 0-60 times as the only data point of which I don't have but you ended with what do you see in real life and I shared what I see after driving 100k miles in ten years with the blower installed. It wasnt hard data points but it wasnt butt dyno responses either. I'd say it doesn't hunt for gears as much also but I have no numbers to prove it to you :p

Try searching cattledog. Think he had some base dyno numbers and post Landtank MAF numbers. Not sure if someone chimed in with sc results but seems familiar.

Good point. Not a heavy ass pig like some folks have but simply meant loaded down with a weeks worth of camping gear for two and some dogs. Only weight I've ever gotten was 6170 but that was a solo trip traveling light. I run front two seats only and no drawers. Front and rear/swingout bumpers,sliders, 3/8" skid, 5gal gas, 5 gal water, spares and tools, and lots of beer/food. Roof rack as minimally packed as possible (no RTT) and some heavy 37s on stock gearing. The last probably being most important. Stock and 285/2.5" I never had issues keeping up and blending with traffic but once the armor and 37s came about it was becoming more of a right lane ride on Long grades if you wanted to stay under 200*. Sc fixed that for me. As another non data point I no longer have to wait for concretejungle at the top of the hill now that he has installed one as well. :beer:
 
Thanks Jason, I appreciate the thoughtful response. To be honest, that's exactly the kind of response I was hoping to get when I did the original post.

I only suggested 0-60 times not because I'm going to be dragging the TLC, but because it's something everyone understands, and there are some decent apps that can measure it pretty well. It certainly helped me to measure whether mods I put on my Tahoe were of any effect.

Rumor has it that scottryana is building an 80 drift rig to compete with GTRs and the likes of. Some 1200HP, turbo for each cylinder, lowered on 22" slicks....

Dunno how true..... :)

I wanna drag race tuners, myself, and building the VMJ73 to do exactly that....

Eyeing cross traffic's light, revving the SCd 1FZ against 2nd gear of the H151F......green light drops, clutch pops, then.....



BAM a 20 sec 1/4 mile run, the snot nosed, sniveling kid, tucking tail in the Borla'd Corolla, too embarrassed to acknowledge defeat....

In cars it isn't hey let's compare our dyno's because every dyno is different it is what is your trap speed in the quarter mile. Believe it or not trap speed and known weight is a very accurate indicator once there is a baseline.

So while it is not the be all end all. If people complain about their 80's not having power, why not see how much power the truck has by running it 0-60? That covers the entire Rev range and a shift and is going to translate directly to drivibilty, merging onto the highway, passing, pulling a step Hill, etc

Off the top of my head the stock truck 15-60 in 14 seconds, rear mount turbo 12 seconds, front mount turbo 8 seconds.

OK, I'm going to say I don't get this. What exactly are you going to break or abuse with a 0-60 test on a properly maintained rig? I don't drive that way all day, just during before-after testing...

I have done many 0-60 runs in my old Tahoe, and that had a curb weight that is quite similar, around 5000+ lbs.

After 10 years, it still drives exactly the same as it did.

I agree if you are uncomfortable doing it, then don't, but I don't see why it would be considered "Cruel".

the supercharger does not really make the 80 series "faster" per say, it is really a matter of having the torque and power when needed to take hills and / or tow. The driveability is overall better with the SC. If you expect large horsepower gains you will be dissapointed.
 
I think I'll do a 0-60 with my 80 at some point, but haven't as of yet. For now though, I'll say that the sc is way more fun to drive with. I've got the Kazuma trd, top mount air to air intercooler, 4.88 gears and 35's. With 240000 miles and badly needing top end service (valve guide smoky), it just pulls really nice. The coolest thing is how rarely it downshifts- passing, big hills, it just rolls! I still would like to try turbocharging/engine management one day and putting this set up on my other 80, but for now it's great
 
The SC just makes it more comfortable to drive. With all the added weight of offroad tires, bumpers, gear for trips, the SC helps offset that.

If you want substantial performance gains, I believe Slee has a turbo setup available.
