I need to replace the stock carb on my 78 fj40 and I'm not sure which to go with. Anyone have personal experience? Also, advise on who to get it from and any "do it yourself" guides would be great help too.
In addition, will I need any further parts other then the carb kit to complete the conversion?
I have Weber 38's on 3 of my Cruisers my other one has fuel injection! I love Webers~some hate 'em? I wheel my Cruisers hard and put miles on 'em too... I want to send one of my 3 Aisans to JimC to do a side by side test someday but?
Anyway if you want to go Weber contact Man A Fre you can get the whole setup from them- be prepared... it'll cost ya!
If you want to stay Aisan Contact JimC on this board or check in the classifieds, a friend of mine even got a good rebuild from Schucks/Kragen
It's Aisin. Sin. Live it. Learn it. Love it. 36 is appropriate for a mini truck with a 4 banger ( I have one on mine.) If you don't do the factory carb, 38 is the way to go.
My picks in order of preference are:
(a) Fuel Injection
(b) Fully baffled Holley
(c) Jim C or Mark A rebuilt factory carb
(d) 38mm Weber (if I stay on the highway)
No other choices even on the chart---all poo-poo
I have ran the Redline Weber 38 for a long time. There are a few other things needed to make it work very well. 1st is a fuel pressure regulator. the cheap one form Specter works for this. Next, hot-rod the ignition. A good reliable spark is your friend as fat as these carbs run. I run a MSD 6A on a Non U.S. distributor with a Pertronix module. I have ran at some pretty crazy angles with this set-up. The biggest thing to do with this set-up is to put a bit of work in making sure the adapter plates seal VERY well. This may involve a little grinding on the bolts' and a good gasket sealer. In the end this set-up has probably cost me a bit more than a good JimC or Marks Offroad rebuild. My only argument to support me is that I set this up before I found IH8MUD and didn't know anything about them. If I ever need to re-carb I will have an Aisin built up. Too many people here speak very highly of this option to ignore.
I have also had my weber 38 on my rig for the last 17+ years it has been great...but...I always had wished I kept my aisin...I too changed over before any knowledge of LCML or TLCA and it was well before mud...
your complete kit is already mounted to your cruiser...just needs a rebuild
Thanks guys for the info on the carb question. Is there a Pedal & Cable Assembly needed for this conversion and who make the kit for the best price, if so?
