Any news?I submitted a form. I'm in. I asked them how many pre-orders that would need to manufacture. We'll see if they respond.
Any news?
Nothing. I suspect I'll have to call after the holidays. Sorry guys!
I was thinking the same thing. General customer service will not help. Need Manufacturing Rep or Development rep.I tried calling today, but there were 62 people ahead of me. Not sure if he managed to get a direct email to someone or just the universal customer service inquiry email
We need someone with connections gentleman![]()
Rich this is perfect - someone there should be able to forward it up the chain without too much of an issue. It’s an easy question for them - “how many would it take?”I sent the following email. I agree, we need an insider, but hopefully they will respond:
Hello,
There are a number of Toyota Landcruiser enthusiasts that have been asking for Weathertech floor liners for their vehicles for some time. There is a thread in the IH8Mud Forum ( Weathertech Floor Mats ???? ) dedicated to figuring out how to get you to produce liners for use. So, given the popularity of the 60 series Landcruisers, how could we go about getting you to produce a product for us? Most of us have multiple vehicle and all of which have your floor liner (its the first thing I buy when I buy a new car!). Could you tell me what size production run you would need to justify producing the product? I am sure we could arrange a vehicle to use as a template. I can't tell you that it will be your biggest seller, but I think that there is enough of a following that it might surprise you. So, if you could give us some parameters to work with, we'd love to see if we could make it happen. FJ60's are what floor liners are made for!
Warmest regards,
Rich Clasen
I've emailed them previously as well. I'd buy a full set (front, rear, and cargo) as soon as they're released. Hopefully, it happens... there isn't anything else even close.
I would be shocked if their tooling cost that much. They offer so many different vehicle models that I suspect that they could do it for a fraction of that. They are not selling thousands of each model. But ultimately, you are correct. I suspect we'd be lucky to get 500 orders. All I really care about is the fronts. But even so, we may be dreaming. Heck, they might not even respond to us.WT would have to manufacture injection molding tooling for 5 different pieces (maybe 4 if they can combine L&R rear). I’m not super familiar with their tooling, but judging from their promotional video, it’s American made and quite large. Conservatively, just the rear mat alone is $100K in tooling, all the pieces together are easily $250K. And that’s not counting the time to dial in the tooling, scan a vehicle, do the engineering/CAD work, etc. So, you’re looking at $400-500K up front investment. How many sets you figure they’ll sell? Last I heard, there were ~5000 6X’s left in the US (~10% of total produced globally), but that may be optimistic and certainly doesn’t count trail rigs or trucks with vinyl floors, etc. But let’s assume they’ll ship a few overseas so let’s stick with the 5000 number. That’s $100 per set just to amortize the tooling if they sell to all those people. But they won’t because being smart business people, they assume a much smaller market, and maybe drop the price once they break even.
Here’s another way to look at it: the first generation Mazda Miata sold almost 10x as many units as the 60/62 over its run. And that car only needs 2 little mats, yet WT wouldn’t produce it and it wasn’t for lack of trying by the forum. Too small and fickle a market.
So, it doesn’t matter how many people in a group buy. If every single 6x owner in the US signed up, it would still be a niche market for them. On the other hand, if they got 500 people willing to pay a $1000 premium, that’s a different story![]()
