Just checking on opinions regarding the low level Warn Winch, the Tabor 9000. I found one on Craigslist for $350, and it retails for $650. Comments and flames appreciated....
I have a 12000 and it has warn relays. I like it. But when I use it in an extended pull, it will stop working for a minute and then start working. I have not time to troubleshoot it though.

If you bury it to the door handles in gumbo 12K won't be enough! My 8K Ramsey and some common sense backed by the extraction kit (snatch block and misc.) keeps me out of trouble just fine.
I agonized over the same issue. There are a ton of conversations about this topic. My reasearch led me to the M12000. With the sliders, ARB front, IPOR rear (all on order) plus gear my rig will eventually come in close to 7500lbs. Factor in some good ole sticky mud and slick rocks I will most likely need every bit of the 12k.
Well I understand that you can bury a vehicle to the point where nothing short of a 8000 series JD tractor is going to get it out, fair enough using a double pulley I guess.
Not all winches are created equal though and that would be a concern as well.
One big recommendation is even if you skimp on a winch DO NOT SKIP on line, synthetic is your best and safest bet as most will agree.
Believe for a full size cruiser ( LWB ) you need to run at least 10K plus winches .. there is a raising market ( or almost raise ) for chinese product .. at the end the Tabor it's the warn cheap line ..
I own a cheap chinese MM electric 12K winch for almost 4 years or so .. use a couple of times with great results ..
The last time that I use it seems to get a clutch problems .. after 4 years, MM cover it with still guarranty ..
it cost me around 400 bucks new .. and I have no clue about my deal ..
After a second look, comparing performance and specs of the Warn TABOR 9Kto my 22 year old Ramsey REP8000H, Tennessee, you might want to look around some more. Mine is 16 lbs lighter, has faster line speed and lower current draw at loads over 3000 lbs. Same basic design (3 stage Planetary gear train) although the Warn has a slightly lower gear reduction and almost identical physical dimensions. It doesn't hurt to have more power as was mentioned by other posters, but it usually means heavier winch, also. You could prolly do better.
Okay so when is someone gonna chime in with the numbers on the pulleys? 25% 50% reduction of energy, force needed to move an amount of weight? I know when your at the gym the weights are alot lighter. So with an 8k winch and doubler pulley you can cut the total forced being pulled in half for the amount of weight the winch is actually pulling??? Hence pull 16k with the right pulley seup
But what are the downfalls, safety concerns, issues with this?
A local 4x4 shop sold me a Tabor 9K for $400 in a package deal with an ARB
bumper. At the time, I had never heard of IH8MUD, and relied on my experience and what other told me. This seemed like a good deal for something I would rarely use.
A few months ago, I needed to recover my LX450 from mud and the Tabor winch proved essentially useless in a 50 ft pull. Yes, with excellent technique it might have worked better, but from this experience I would not even consider a Tabor 9k for an 80 series.
Recently, I've obtained a M8000 (another "deal"). I've not installed it on the LX. I plan to up grade to a 12000lb winch or an air compressor/winch combo for the LX and use the M8000 on an FJ 40.
Yeah well, maybe you ought to look into a PTO. It sounds to me like your gonna need it. Electrics will get you so far and then get you stranded when you rely on the winch to do your "wheelin" for you. As for me, I'm 54 yrs old and I remember when I had no sense and some of the situations I fell into! Now, I rely on a winch to help me out of the unexpecteced and the occasional . In other words, I don't go lookin' for trouble 'cause it has no trouble finding me!
I'd take a Warn M8000 over any of the Chinese winches. Do a search on Uglibus. He's running an M8000 on an 80 with 40s. I've personally seen that rig being winched by the M8000 and it does fine. Now if you are going to bury it up to the doors in mud. You might need bigger winch. Another thing to consider if this is your plan is how strong are your recovery points. Best to think of this before your bury it.
I'll throw in my personal experience. If you decided to go with the 9K#, carry a 16K# snatch block in your trunk at all time. Believe me, it never hurts and will be very useful.

i had a tabor 9k on my 4runner and Got that thing into many of those situations and with a plan and a snatch block it pulled me out of every situation I could get in. I was thinking of putting it on my 80 but am having doubts now. i liked the idea of a tabor because its still a warn and they are located in clakamas OR which is close to me so I can go to them with any problems.
Thanks for the reply, everyone, and useful information it is. These are big trucks, and generally I wheel with others that have winches, not ever wheeling alone. In that case, a lower grade winch would be ok, for backup. I might just save a bit more and buy a new winch with a higher satisfaction rating (and line pull) and use a synthetic line/snatchblock too....
