I rebuilt an 1980’s 8274. Purchased the 9.5xp motor to replace the prestolite that was on there. The 9.5xp came with a washer that fits on the motor shaft. Do I need to use that washer on an older 8274? The motor I took off didn’t have the washer (if I remember correctly).
Thx!

I am in the exact same position you are with the 8274 rebuild w/the 9.5XP motor and washer. Original motor did not have the washer.

Post 409-411 mention the washer. Poster says that the washer is not used on older housings.

@MacDaddyRabbit

I just took some measurement and I am planning on using the washer. There will be a .02” gap between the washer and bearing in my case (plus the thickness of the gasket). Placing it on the motor shaft before inserting into the bearing.

here are some Pics of the measurements I took

I don't remember putting the washer in on mine, but my 8274 is a 1978 vintage. It's been a while though.

Mine is around the same vintage. Not convinced that the washer is absolutely necessary but Seems like it won’t cause a problem. I don’t want to put a thrust load in the bearing at the back of the armature but with I add the gasket in the clearance should be pretty significant.

i just rebuilt my 8274 with the xp9.5. i used the washer and it clearanced well. i haven’t used it yet but since it fit with no issues i figured it was worth using

here’s the page from my build with some details on the winch. Builds - 77 FJ40 Build, It begins...and may take a while. hope it might be helpful

Solid build. Thx for the feedback. Here is a pic of my winch build and the free spool knob I turned out at lunch yesterday:)

I went with glass bead blasted finish with a Matt clear coat on the aluminum parts. Fun project. Ready to get it in the new bumper and covers with dirt;)

I digress;)

FYI I optioned to install the washer after seeing photos of measured clearance, others who have installed it, and the coin toss.
Post installation, the winch operates great (under no load). No indication of bearing load issues or oddities. Time will tell. If someone comes forth with an adamant NO then I can always disassemble and remove the washer. If anything goes south I'll post the outcome. Thanks to all.
