I'm adding a PTO to my 1963 FST FJ40 and need to cut the hole for the shifter in the transmission hump.

Can anyone provide me with some measurements or a template, so I can verify my cut before I make it?

A digital photo with a tape measure would be fine, maybe one from the fire wall andone from the driver's side seam?

Thanks,

Dan

Which transmission you using? I have a 61 with the stock PTO lever hole in the transmission cover. Not sure the later style three speed would be the same.

I have a three speed, column shift out of a 65 FJ in it now.

Like John said, this is for the 1961, not sure it's the same. :hhmm:

Anyone have a picture of the 1961-1962 transmission cover with the PTO shift lever cutout? I used the measurements in the 1961 service bulletin but they seem to use an imaginary line which I'm assuming is the centerline of the vehicle and want to make sure it's right.

Let me check mine tomorrow. My 61 appears to be factory installed including the guard to hold the PTO lever in neutral. Still has the correct transmission/transfer case.

Early PTO linkage was different then the mid 63 and later. There isn't a thread hole cast into the trnamission housing. A bracket was bolted to the transmission top cover for the PTO lever to mount to.

Here are a couple of pictures. Need more I can make a template. The opening is just under five inches from the seam above it. Also notice the lever is angled from the driver's side instead of straight up on the mid 63 and later.

John, That looks like my measurements are correct. Can you give me the screw hole spacing and distance from the lever hole? Thanks!

Oh, and it looks like I'll have to fabricate a bracket and lever. Anybody have pics of how they mount? It's too hard to tell from the old parts manuals.

Here is another picture. Doubt those bolts are original. I see if I can remove them from above and get some good measurements. If not I do the best I can.

Here is where is parked outside. If it were in the garage I would pull the transmission tunnel cover and get you pictures of the mounting bracket. Think the only place I have with pictures is my parts micro-fiche and no way to copy those. I see if I can't figure something out.

I'll get you the measurements for the bolts. Pretty easy removing the bolts thru the PTO opening. 7/16" head on both bolts and nuts so not original. I forgot this engine was just rebuilt before I bought and parked the cruiser. Figure I would check the bolts for the transmission cover. Every bolt that was still stock came out easy. Was even easy to remove the ones under the gas tank with a flexible head ratchet wrench. Upper right hand corner they used a SAE nut and bolt. Not to hard to get out. The left of the upper two center bolts they decided to use a SAE bolt into the caged square nut. The nut is spinning inside the cage.:bang: Of all the bolts on the cover this is the hardest one to get a vise grip pliers on to hold the nut. Other side is fairly easy. This side has manifolds, exhaust, gas pedal linkage, brake lines,...... This make me wonder the quality of the rest of their work. Leaving the bolt out would have been better than this.:crybaby: It rained last night so it hot and humid already. I'll put on my thinking cap and see if I can't figure something out. I ran into the same thing on my grey FJ25 but that is up north (cool) and parked in a garage making it easier to work on. This F engine supposably has rebuild head from SOR which cost $500 according to the seller.:meh:

The 1961 picture from Jim's post (#4) was missing so I am uploading it again.

Data:
Winch Cable = 8 dia. 50,000 legnth mm
Capacity = 1,000 kg
Chain = 1,000 mm

I ended up grinding the head of the bolt off to remove the cover. The cover is covered with heavy grease. Remove the bracket but need to clean for pictures. Besides the bracket there are three spacers to fill in the gap for the lip around the outside of the top cover. Also noticed the holes for the cover don't seem to be evenly spaced from large opening. Personally I would drill the hole after you have everything together and then place the lock in the best spot and mount it there. It is also important that pin the lever pivots off in spaced correctly so the open will be in the right spot. I have the whole thing covered for the day but don't believe the rod is adjustable like the later ones. I work on it again tomorrow.

Shifter plate and linkage pictures. It appears by looking at the technical bulletin the rod is installed backwards on mine. It does have a adjustment but it towards the front instead of the back. The will allow for some adjustment to center the shifter so it's in the center of the opening when in neutral.

Transmission cover pictures. The lock for the PTO shifter is different that any other I have. All those are different that each other except the mounting pretty close. The 61 is larger and the other ones are just short of fitting. Forward screw hole is 3/4" from the edge of the opening to center if the screw hole. The other measures 5/8". Between the two it's 1 1/4" center to center. But keep in mind this lock is larger than all the others,

As far a being a hoarer probably true. The 61 with the PTO I probably remove the tub and install my early soft top tub. If I can sell the hard top tub with what is left of my earlier 61 hard top that the tub is shot I will or I'll just recycle it. The 63 hard top which is third one in will go too. Both the 61 hard top tub and 63 only have rear sill rust. The 25 in between the two I'm going to switch some stuff with my white 25. Then sell it and along with my grey 25. At that point I will still have 6 FJ40s, a FJ45, FJ62 and one FJ25. That is still way to many.:bang:

You can never have too many cruisers. You CAN have too may PTO ship lever hinged lock things, though. Hint, hint. "Cough...sell me one...cough"

Thanks for all those photos and measurements. That will help tremendously.

I know the feeling, but I'm a much smaller lot...1/3 acre. 45, 40, 2 pigs here, one at redline, 4runner and two 80s. Way too cramped.
