Hey Kirk

Thanks for the advice!

Appears www.napaonline.com sells the solenoid seperate for $99 instead of $400 for a starter!

I am very particular about putting OEM only parts into my rig, so i just fired off a PM to Cdan to see if these parts are seperate from Toyota as well

Cool happy to help. Call anytime!

I have the EXACT same problem. In fact, I was just about to post the same question. The only difference is whereas yours will clunk and not start, mine will clunk and start.

My rig has 88K miles on it, with the original starter....

I've found that mine only does it on occasion. Maybe very 5th start and only when the engine is cold. If I shut off and try to start it again, no more noise.

The noise sounds like I hit the key, but then let off just as the engine was about to fire and thus the clunk.

I've had Toyota starters go out, but never with this clunk noise. Usually, when the solenoid goes bad, it just stops energizing the motor, because the contacts are worn, so you get a click of the solenoid plunger engaging, but no power from the battery contact to the starter motor contact.

The missing teeth on the fly wheel make more sense for these circumstances, but then how to teeth get busted off the flywheel?

I don't see where you are getting $400 bucks for a starter but www.toyotapartandservice.com is showing a remaned one for $274. And I bet Dan can do better than that.

What you have described is my exact problem after I rebuilt my starter. Installed remaned starter and the problem went away.

WOW! My exact Scenario!

Now, that you mention it, you are right, it ONLY does it when its COLD and NEVER when it warms up, weird!!

I usually use www.sor.com for my estimated OEM prices. They had it for $375 or so, plus shipping.

If dan can get me an OEM reman for around $200, that would be most cool! :D

An OEM reman is not $400.

I don't have the receipt in front of me but I think I paid in the $220 region for a reman out of the box from Unkle Toyota.

Look, here's the picture too!

I have a reman sitting on the shelf. Same time I purchased 3 rebuild kits from Dan. When you put it back together you should think about attaching a breather hose--this is where mine has gone wrong.

my idea is to carry a rebuilt spare.....

Mean Green Starter?

Anybody ever try one of these mean green starters? About $300 from Man-a-fre

http://www.man-a-fre.com/parts_accessories/MeanGreenGearReductionStarter.htm

I got hosed for over $400 for a reman when my dealer put it in for my daughter while I was out-of-town. No warnings for me, the car just wouldn't turn off with the key out so she drove it to the dealer and they disconnected the battery and then stuck me for the new starter. I probably wouldn't have had the time to do the rebuild myself, but I sure would have found the time to swap the whole starter and maybe try the meangreen deal.

Mean Green starters are a scam. Search the MUD forums and you'll see.

Inquiring minds want to know: did the reman fix your problem?

Been super busy and havent got around to it. I pulled the starter last week and havent touched it since.

I am going to check the flywheel tomorrow after work and if the teeth are good, i am ordering a new reman

I will post up the results

Thanks

Let us know.

UPDATE:

I ordered the complete reman, from our good friend CDAN

Just installed it this AM and no more scary noises!

I tried approx 10 startup and shut down cycles and it sounds nice and smooth now!

Rock On!

Woo Woo. Cool I'm glad that was it.

I, too, had this clunking noise before my starter started showing the classic click-no-start symptoms. After replacement, no more clunk!

I had the same noise/symptoms before my starter died. I replaced contacts and plunger and it works again, but the clunking noise still happens every 2nd or 3rd cold start.
Now that I have already invested a bit of time in "fixing" the starter I don't want to spend any coin on a new or refurbished starter

So my question is; Is it a faulty solenoid that is causing the clunking noise and should i replace /repair that, or could it be the bushes in the starter?

sounds like a faulty solenoid to me...
