Adding my 2 cents:
Like candluiser, I had replaced the contacts ~ 2 years ago (~ 10k miles) having had the starter fail in the 'engaged' position. The new contacts worked great... until last week while I was out of town with my wife at the wheel. Similar clunking sound everytime I tried to start - nasty sound! - but I could not get it to start no mater what i did. Pulled the starter tonight and did the tests indicated by the FSM and it passed them all.
So, I am asking the same question: with fairly new contacts installed, is it faulty contacts again, bad solenoid (won't stay engaged) or failing starter motor/solenoid drive?
