VERY SCARY Noise during start up! Oh Oh!

Adding my 2 cents:

Like candluiser, I had replaced the contacts ~ 2 years ago (~ 10k miles) having had the starter fail in the 'engaged' position. The new contacts worked great... until last week while I was out of town with my wife at the wheel. Similar clunking sound everytime I tried to start - nasty sound! - but I could not get it to start no mater what i did. Pulled the starter tonight and did the tests indicated by the FSM and it passed them all.

So, I am asking the same question: with fairly new contacts installed, is it faulty contacts again, bad solenoid (won't stay engaged) or failing starter motor/solenoid drive?

FYI

My starter that was making the hoffific sounds also had brand new contacts!

Hmmmm

When you rebuilt the old clunker starter did you also replace the plunger or just contacts?

Glad you got it fixed Kevin.

Did you take a part the old starter to see what was wrong?
