Stumbled upon this. I know a lot of you have upgraded your audio. Some of the way he did things isn't practical, (taking up the cargo pocket tool space in the rear and the dead pedal speaker is just begging to be destroyed by my muddy wet boots) but some of you might pull some ideas from this. It's on my list to improve my crummy sound system and I'm not even an audio enthusiast.

Very cool setup. Wonder how it sounds if you put in a platform or drawers

I could not stand losing my dead pedal foot rest, but is a nice install.

Agreed, but I could hang with the truck work if that sub had a grille over it. I had a JL 12 in my last truck that had a mesh grill over it. I dented the s*** outta that grill and it was a well spent $20 to protect my expensive speaker. Then ghetto people stole it.

Classic ghetto people... This is a pretty slick install but I could probably see that sub getting bashed by cargo

Did anyone notice how plush his carpeting is?

Ya I read the whole build and that whole truck looks like amazing. Farther down in the thread, they actually have a pic of the driver side sub covered, in the same fashion as the kick space speaker cover and the stock door speakers. Since the kick speakers' covers were reinforced with wire mesh it's reasonable to assume the rear ones got the same treatment. The owner wanted to maintain full use of cargo space as well, so it's hard to believe they overlooked that potential damage. It's super nice setup for sure, I'm quite jealous.

Wow!

Ok, I think you captured it - very clean - and an impressive install.

The BAM Focal is great stuff too. Used it in the front doors. I thought I went overboard on my sound deadening, but this one would give my LC a run for its money.

I'd love to hear how the system sounds in person.

That Illusion Audio sub is a nice touch - haven't heard of them before. Looks like the Carbon C10 is just under 3 inches - might have to check that one out. I still need a sub and am not sure I want to use the stock location (currently empty). But that might work.

Thanks for sharing - lots of ideas in there.

Hey All,

I know this thread is a bit old but I just came across it. The LC in question happens to be mine. if anyone would like more info I would be happy to provide it.

Yes, some of the things done would be impractical for most. I would have never done some of them to my LC I had when I lived in Idaho. However, I now live on a rather small island in the Bahamas. No chance of muddy boots, just sandy flip flops. Also, one of our businesses is construction and the island is not very big. Therefore I don't even need to carry a jack or spare with me. Just call one of the foreman to send a guy. A bit spoiled I guess.

Yes, all the speakers have expanded wire mesh under the cloth. Was not gonna risk it. Could stab it with a screw driver and it would be safe.

I am heavy into home audio and always wanted to do a system like this in an LC. I had the basic concept figured out. Russ, the installer, took it to a whole other level. (And Cost!) He is a bit of an artistic type so there were days and weeks where he could not work on it due to lack of inspiration and such. But patience definitely paid off. It sounds absolutely incredible. I find myself sitting in it listening to track after track when I should be stepping into the office or out on a site. Its pretty addictive.

Long and short of it is I no longer live a life that has me doing any off roading but I still love LCs and have a hard time driving anything else. This was a way to customize this one and show it some love. I also replaced all the leather and trim along with a bunch of upgrades etc. while the stereo install was being done.

Again, feel free to shoot me any questions you have. Happy to help.

Be well

Very nice Bahama.

The install in your rig has many of us envious.

It might be nice if you typed up a thread with all the upgrades/goodies. Just a thought though.

Thanks for sharing it with all of us.

Beautiful install!

Any photos of the rear side panel work? It looks like the installer must have either made 100% new panels, or bonded fiberglass areas the the factory plastic to get the subwoofer areas deep enough. The color match is VERY good too... I'd be interested to know what method and color code was used to dye or paint those panels.

Greg,
The panels were made using the original panels and then ALOT of fiberglass to reshape and reduce vibration. The sub boxes were also custom fiberglass boxes shaped to fit perfectly into the rear corners. The installer worked in an upholstery shop as a kid and then did a lot of custom car work. He wrapped the panels as well as the front kick panel speaker pods in matching vinyl. Did an amazing job.
I will dig through old emails etc and see if I can find any photos beyond what is in the build thread linked at the start of this thread.

Love your K5 build. Really want to do one for the island one day.

I will see about putting together more info on the audio build. The thread does a pretty good job. I might have some additional pics floating around. The LC received very little mods beyond the audio install. Mostly a lot of cosmetic restoration.

Thanks for all the kind words on the install. It is pretty sick. Now if only my wife will let me drive it more often! : )

Bumping this old thread but it's worth pointing out that Steve Head (mentioned in the thread for tuning the vehicle) is a very well known name in the mobile audio world. I can't think of anyone more impressive to have had his hand on the tuning (though the installer did great work as well).

This, folks, is how you do car audio
