I'm a new owner of a '91 FJ, it's from California and has an alarm system. I have not had a chance to poke around, but I'm curious if this was an OEM option from Toyota? I'm thinking it is not a Toyota option. The key fob is not an original Toyota fob but that doesn't necessarily mean the alarm system is aftermarket. The reason I'm asking around is because I've had a recent issue. The one key that came with it was extremely worn so I decided to have an extra one cut. The brand new key worked perfect. However, when used the original key the truck would not start at all and the alarm would go off every time I would try to use the original key. I put the new key in and it started right up. Does anyone have any insight on alarm systems and this weird key issue? I've never had an alarm system in my forty years and I'm thinking I should just have it removed.

I think most of the OEM alarm systems were port installed by Toyota when these trucks were brought in to the country. Alot of the members here on Mud just disconnect their factory alarm, if you do a search, you'll probably find a few threads on how to do it. As to your keys, I'm not sure what's going on there. I did hear that these trucks came from the factory with 2 types of keys, one, a full function key that would operate everything, and another key that was known as a "valet" key. You might want to look in your owners manual about what the "valet" key does.

Nearly all the US market 80 series had an RS3000 alarm installed at the port. Did you get a key fob to activate/deactivate your alarm? Does your alarm go off when you open the door, or not until you try to start it?

I'm sure you can find threads about how to uninstall the alarm, but I haven't seen them. I have seen threads about trying to use the harness from the RS3000 to hook in a newer alarm. I was pretty pleased to have the RS3000 alarm in my truck work fine after I bought a fob as found in this thread. Missing an Factory Alarm key fob? Try this

Thanks for the insight. If the alarm sounds I usually press one of the buttons on the fob. I'm not sure if it goes off when you open the door or start the vehicle. Is one an indicator of a factory alarm? Furthermore, what does it mean when someone says "installed at the port"?

"Installed at the port" means very nearly the same as "dealer installed". The Toyota factory didn't install it, so it isn't "factory installed". It wasn't left open to the dealer to decide if they wanted to sell the option. It was installed at the port of import, by someone who had the power to decide what options US vehicles should have. I expect that was Toyota, rather than a dealer network.

Another "Port installed option" is the roof rack if you have one. It's another thing that many people on Mud say is terrible (like the alarm). As with the alarm, I find my roof rack to be quite adequate.

Hi! I did not even know i had an alarm functionning in this 80, but last night, the horn just kept on going non stop, the breakage sensor was lit, so was the parking lights and dash lights. Nothing happened, it was sitting there since i got home, it just panic by it self
Did not know what to do to stop it, so i unhooked the battery.

Is this how it is supposed to go? The horn and lights are steady on?
Pretty bad.. Or is it malfunctionning?

I might consider taking it out since i dont need it and i would like to avoid this again
But the key less entry could be nice.

Is it just unplugging it? That simple?

Thanks

Edit.. Oh is there a wiring diagram for this? Thanks

if its a normal 'factory' installed alarm (RS3000 VIP - check black box under DS seat) then it can be be disconnected. Not too hard ; just time related. Search and find instructions.

My pesky alarm is not connected to the horn or the lighting system. You shut it off using the fob. My alarm system also has a blue light near the heater controls. Your system could be aftermarket.

Thanks, i'm looking this through this morning.
