I need to adjust my valves and paint the valve cover. Do y'all think I'll need a new gasket or would I be able to get by without. It looks like it may be a mix of rtv and a gasket.

It's hard to tell from here. I'd probably replace it.

Can you get it off without ruining it. I use aviation Permatex to bond the gasket to the head. That way its sealed, forming a dam to help prevent oil seeping out. Also the cover comes right off without damage so I can put it back on after checking the valves. I don't put much pressure on the cover to hold it in place.

Is the gasket soft and pliable or is it stiff or hard? Are there any contaminates or sealer on the gasket that contacts the head surface? Either gasket material is probably OK.

I don’t know how old your 40 is, but if the gasket is over 10 years old I personally would swap it out and start fresh. Especially if it already is sealed with rvt. New ones that last a really long time and are reusable after a yearly valve adjustment are available from Mr. Toyota.

Use oem and lightly snug the nuts down....no RTV. This needs to be serviceable. I've never seen anyone have issues nor myself with factory gasket. If it leaks slightly snug down a little more.

There are two oem gaskets, just note which year valve cover you are using.

depends on what vintage valve cover you have.
the steel ones used cork
the aluminum ones used rubber
good time to upgrade the steel one with aluminum
good idea to replace the 4 gaskets around the nuts
the aluminum will seal better than the steel
