Yeah.. I certainly am not an expert on 16-21 200s, but as far as I know, no 200 series got any type of phone app integration (other than the Toyota apps which are a joke).

Also, just to be fair, for $500 in new parts and a little elbow grease you can add the 2016+ brakes to a 08-15… just to continue to muddy the waters. (Surprise, there is a whole thread here about how to do it complete with multiple ways to skin that cat).
 
Definitely not any way to run Apple/Google/Waze/etc. on the factory system.
 
To have any maps besides Lexus, you'll need to add on a carplay device (like GROM V-Line) and if you do that, you can use any map application that works with carplay including google, apple, GAIA, Waze, etc.

Semi-aniline is supposed to show less wear or develop less patina than other leather but I don't know if it is necessarily any more resistant to tearing.

I am talking about my 2017. All you get is OEM maps, useless apps like Iheartradio that you cannot delete. I am unaware if newer 19-22 models finally got smartphone integration like carplay.

To the point of upgrading brakes, it's pretty easy to do and even bleeding with techstream is a one man job.

We opted for a 2017 because of the much more modern interior feel which was a big deal for my wife to "feel" like she's in a newer car. The kids love the novelty of the rear screens but it's functionally inferior to a ten year old ipad.

HUD is a neat gimmick.

Bird's eye view cameras are also pretty nice off road and in tight parking spots (I don't believe the pre-'16s have this).

The only serious negative for me is the low front bumper and tacky options for aftermarket replacements. I'm trying to figure out a way to do a hidden winch mount and chin trim.
 
I’m on the value side. High mile 1st gen LX 2009 and was a bit less than $20k. Lots of money for mods. Paid cash etc. so saved recurring costs like interest. functionally the same as a 2021 except for the tranny and brakes (I like the 6 speed just fine), and can always retro the brakes. Not fussed about pin stripes and kid wear. Because there is no reason to fuss about it on a 13 year old body.

A note - my kids of 11, 14. 16 abandoned the 3rd row seat on the very first trip. They’d rather sit 3 across. Makes for more gear room anyhow, and the 2nd row bench is plenty wide for it.

Samesies… 2010 with 99k for $22k paint trashed and leather not torn but in bad shape.. lots of broken plastic.. a few hundred to fix the rattling plastic pieces and now I could care less if I scratch it on the trail.. some day I’ll get some fancy seat covers.. but does t bother me at all..mine was religiously maintained and owned by a trust until 85k miles.. questionable maintenance from 85-99k… but seems to have worked out.. couple years in and only some minor quibbles..
 
The 21” wheels on the 2016+ models are not my favorite either. 21” wheels are such an odd size. Pretty sure most of them came with the 21s

The luxury models came with the 21's, the base comes with 20's.
 
Pretty sure most of them came spec’d with the 21” wheel option though. Yes 20s are standard but most got the optional wheels

I don't know if the 21's were available as an option on a non-luxury model but when we bought ours I never saw 21's on a base. Now, most dealers had luxury trims in inventory because most people wanted the rear entertainment screens, ML sound and HUD so it would make sense that the majority of them seen on the road have 21's. We wanted a two-row so it made it easy for us to settle for the base and the 20's were much more livable as well.

About that- does the two row option free up good bit of cargo space - like where it gets rid of those bases? Or can a third row be added back later?

The bases don't exist in the two-row, it's the same as the original HE's, there's no way to add third row jump seats because the anchor points and seat belt bolts don't exist.

It’s much easier to take a 3 row and make it 2 row than vice versa. If you were never going to use the 3rd row, it’s nice to have all the trim and panels not have holes for mounting the 3rd row.

Good point. What I keep thinking about is having my 3 kids in the middle, and those AC controls. I use a full seat protector like people with dogs use bc I really hate kids crumbs in my upholstery. They’d obviously have no access to the AC controls. Can I operate theirs independently from the front or can I only turn them on or off, and in AUTO?
 
My question for the group is how do y’all value a fully loaded 2015 with the 6 speed and older dash tech vs the 2016? I’m seeing a huge premium, like $13-15k for the same miles and condition. What are some thoughts about what your getting there? I plan to keep this vehicle for 15+ years.
For me it's a question of how I will use it. There are aspects of both generations that I like.

For a pavement-pounding family hauler I'd opt for the facelifted 2016+ models. Better tech, more modern styling, likely a bit quieter, etc. I'd keep this vehicle stock and enjoy it for what it is.

For a "rougher" existence (road trips, towing, off-road, Home Depot hauls, etc.) I prefer the earlier models (like my 2014). Subdued styling that doesn't attract attention (a good thing when you're traveling far away from home), simpler/older body makes it easier to find not only replacement panels, but aftermarket bumpers and other parts. Proper, physical hand break lever is a HUNDRED times better than the electronic option, no dealing with the "mouse" interface to the head unit, and likely more I'm forgetting.

How much are the upsides of one (vs the other) worth? Only you can decide.

In a perfect world I'd have one of each!
 
I opted to pay cash for an immaculate '09 with 150k miles. I don't dislike the newer ones, but I thought if these things last forever, then I'm ok with a clean older one, and that's what I happened to find locally. I do all my own maintenance. My LX is very quiet on the road (at least a lot quieter than my Tundra) and smooth as can be.

I remember reading in another thread that a couple people who have owned both an early and a later 200 series said there is almost nothing remarkable about the 8 speed vs 6 speed transmissions. My thought is, the more gears there are to choose from, the more it's going to shift, but it's probably very smooth and not bothersome.

I did upgrade my front brakes using all Toyota/Lexus parts, and it stops with authority now. If you go with an '08-'15, I would highly recommend it. It's not a hard job, and there are a couple of great write-ups on the forum.

I threw this in mine which allows the center section to come down and access the armrest but keep both outboard back panels in place.
 
The 16+ has really good headlights in comparison as well.
 
Whatever year you get dump the stock rims and throw so some 18s on here. That is the first thing I did to my '13. I found some nice 18 LC wheels here on mudd. 20/21 inch rims are dumb, even dumber on a truck.

And yes you can operate all the AC zones from the front. I also ditched the 3rd row and put in a set of Savute drawers. great system and super useful.
