I am looking at this 1970 FJ40. I have always wanted one and found this one in a mans yard. I asked him if he would sale. He said he would take $11,000. Is it worth it? The body seems solid. All original. Nothing missing. He has hub caps etc. Has been setting up and not running but when he parked it it ran good he said. What do y'all think?
Thanks for your in put and direction.
Tommy

Any more pics? How does the underside look? How does it run and drive.
From that one overall pic it looks pretty good

Looks like you are in GA.
I wouldn't disclose where it is but if it's not too from from me I'd be happy to go look at it with you.

It has been setting up and has not ran in a few years. He said it was running fine when he parked it. Did not want to try and start with old fuel in tank.

Check for body filler, not sure what it is but that rear corner looks a little wavy & thick to my eye, could be wrong. Some overspray on windshield gasket upper driver side? Coul just be the pic. If repainted I would want to know all about the prior condition & what was done etc...always wondered why the bezels get flipped, someone removed it for a reason and reinstalled it upside down.

Love that color!

Yes its worth it so long as its not a rusted tub. Take someone with you with experience for sure.

Thanks so much for the info you guys or sharing! It was repainted years ago and the buzel was installed up side down. I checked body well, there is no bondo.
I just was not sure what it was worth. I no it needs work and I am looking forward to taking care of that. Just did not want to get burned. Thanks again!

IMO, $11k is a bit high given its not original paint and doesn't run.

I thought it was original paint for a few seconds and damn near fell out of my chair! I'd offer less than asking. $8k would be more reasonable...or tell him to get it running properly for the full ask...

I'd say that looks like a $7,500 cruiser to me. Especially since it doesn't run. You never know what you're going to have to throw into it to get it going again.

I don't know, I think I'd pay $9-10k as is assuming it has no rust or only minimal rust. It has a hard top and it looks clean which is hard to find. It's local and you don't have to ship so you just saved $1000-1500 there. The 2F is so easy to work on. I'd subtract about $500 if the tires are dry rotted. Think end goal. If you have a solid running and driving 40 for under $15k these days you are doing great.

Kinda depends on what you're going to do with it ('70 has body rib that makes upgrading to disc brakes challenging/$$). But if you're going to run it as a stocker (recommended, cut up some other truck if you want a trail brawler), @ $7K, assuming:

1. It cranks and provides good compression numbers in all cylinders.
2. The trans and TC shift easily and balance of driveline is sound (miles on clutch and clutch master holds pressure).
3. But critical issue is condition of frame (must be solid for that kinda cashola, check the frame rail next to the muffler and the rear shackle hangers and angled supports to rear crossmember/bumper).
4. The other critical issue is the condition of tub, especially the rear sill and the floors and rockers on both driver's and passenger's sides, and both rear wheel wells (check supports in wheel wells). As suggested above, definitely run a magnet over the driver's side rear corner above the taillight, looks like bondo sculpture ta me (there was a reason for the repaint).

Oh, and that engine is the F, not a 2F, but that's OK, it's still a great engine. Pull the plugs out and give 'em the eyeball. Give the oil a look/sniff (contaminated with gas indicating possible cylinder wall wash?). Check coolant and squeeze radiator hoses to see if they've gone ... uh, flaccid. Pull the fuel line off, donate a new filter to the cause, run the fuel line into a can of fresh gas, and while the plugs are out, spin it over to build compression, check with gauge (compression and oil pressure), add a teaspoon of oil (or Marvel Mystery to lube up the rings) and re-run spin test to see if compression changes (indicating tired rings versus poor valve sealing), install plugs, and with a little ether up 'is nose, the ole boy outta roar to life with a fresh batt providing the electrons. That might make the price go up tho ....

Overall it appears to be a very solid, complete, unmolested rig, worth the effort to check out carefully and negotiate respectfully. Not $11K, but definitely quite nice (take cash ... a stack of Mr. Franklins can be most persuasive) . Bottom line is always what a ready, willing, and able buyer will pay, not what armchair Cruiser nuts (like me, for example) think. GL, let us know how it goes!

There's a 40 for sale in the classifieds for 15k that, if it's in your price range, would be a nice grab. Think it's in AZ tho
