so speak up and let me know what you have done to relocate the vacuum pump on your 'b/2B/3B/2H' diesels.
i am getting rid of the old vacuum pump mounted on the back of the alternator and going with a 100 amp alternator and remote pump.

let me know.

or if you have a suggestion of an upgraded higher amp alternator/vacuum pump combo then that would work too.

As you probably are aware, the 1HDT, 1HZ and 1PZ all had a separate vacuum pump from the alternator. Others likely as well.
 
I have an electric one in the 80.

I have a resevoir out of a ford, and it is switched on and off via a vacume switch.

I do have two issues with the thing.

1. the pump and resevoir take up too much space, I mounted the pump between the inner fender and front quarter, the resevoir is near the engine (its already crowded with the 6BT)

2. The vacume switches are not rated (at least not for more than a few seconds) for the amperage of the pump. So you need to run them on the control for the relay, i.e. (power from ignition to relay coil +, then - to vacume switch, other side of switch to vehicle ground)

The extra relay and associated wiring/switch take up space too. My engine compartment is a little cluttered if you havent guessed.

I burnt out my second vacume switch, my pump was running continuously, then it started to make noise, now its usually pretty quiet. The 6BT's pump was on the back of the steering pump and wasnt working really great, but is T'd into the system, so I still have some vacume in the system.

I would have rebuilt the factory vacume pump but I couldnt find a rebuild kit (until after I had the electric pump installed) and to replace the pump meant a new steering pump (like $1k).

Eventually Ill rebuild the factory pump, just no time at the moment.

Sorry for the sidetrack but thats my experience.

Reviews on it are kind of mixed. Prices for the electric pump jump quickly from there: Amazon.com: SSBC 28146 Electric Vacuum Pump Kit: Automotive. There are lots of electric vacuum pumps on the market. The majority are not mean to be the primary source of vacuum. They are meant as a vacuum boost to cammed out gas engines which don't produce enough of their own vacuum.

I was going to suggest an electric vacuum pump. There are also combo alternator/pump units that could be adapted. Isuzu and GM had combo units you could probably source for a reasonable price.

I would confirm with the manufacturers that the pump is designed for constant operation as a primary vacuum pump. From what I read on the manufacturer's web site, this pump is designed as a boost vacuum pump.

Go to murphy machines.com They sell 12 volt vacuum pumps. i have used three in line for about 4 years with absolutely no problems. I have a super sucker and have collected about 20k gallons of wvo with them on a 350 gallon tank. I have even overfilled the tank and ran wvo thru them about two years ago and no die. Expensive but so are the side panels you build for the troopy.
 
I have a 12V vacuum pump in my setup. It is this one: SSBC:: 28157

Overall Its ok... it does just fine keeping up with the brakes on its own. I still need to add a vaccum tank (was in a hurry to install and drive from bc to ontario). It does seem prone to breakdown and vibrates a lot (the welds holding it to the mounting plate broke and I have yet to fix them)

If you get one I recomend a very strong horizontal mount attached to something stable and make sure you use the rubber feet it comes with...

I also went to a chev style 1 wire alternator something from these guys:

Works well each one is individually dyno'd at the factory made a little custom mount for it out of my original alternator mount. Re-used the original tensioner with a little modification.

I think the one that I got was rated at 160Amps on the dyno and rated at 100A or so at idle speed. I had to source my own pully for it (reused the stock one first with a spacer but that didn't work so good (didn't turn fast enough at idle) so I picked one up at princess auto.
 
My option was hyundai galloper alt .. 120 amps with vac pump attached .. around 350 bucks brand new ..

I was looking for more options to run the 150 amps tundra alt .. but still not convinced with the electric vac pump idea .. then move to the hydro boost idea .. pretty nice .. I'm upgrading my PS pump and reservoir ( fancy expensive one from PSC ) in order to do some steps in that direction ..
 
T-ride, we are talking about vacuum pump for vacuum air - not a liquid pump.

he is talking about a vacuum pump. you fill your wvo transfer tank by pulling it into a vacuum.
if its lasted that long and stood up to accidentally sucking in some vo then its probably a viable option.
 
I have a used belt driven vacuum pump from a 1997 ford power stroke that I will try to mount on a 3b one of this day

Throw some pictures of the setup in this thread when you ever get around to it please. That sounds like a good option if mine ever fails.
 
For no particuar reason I was just browsing an electric vehicle conversion website here on the island, pretty much all their kits come with this vacuum pump.

Doesn't seem to say where the pump comes from, you'd have to email the guy I guess....
 
I sent him an email and will post when he replies. That is a pretty nice vacuum pump.

I also asked him about doing a 4WD electric car with 4 DC motors on the hub. I suggested that an FJ40 would be a nice platform for the conversion. Can you imagine the torque and throttle control with 4 DC motors? :bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:

Our vacuum pump is a bit more than most but the our brass switch is the key to the whole thing.
We have had Zero failures over the last 15 years. Most of the small cheap pumps go 2-3 years max.
Pump with switch and feet is $468.52.
We are converting a brand new Ford Ranger 4X4 at the moment.

Very interesting Tapage, especially if you are running real big rubber. There is an outfit here in Vancouver which sells hydro boost kits: powerbrakes hydroboosts vacuum boosters everything for your extreme braking needs. But it will be well over $1200 to just buy the components. That makes the electric car vacuum pump a lot more economical.

well that depends .. it can be done on buget .. many ( lot ! ) Vans ( Astro ), cars ( mustangs ) and trucks ( F250 and 350 ) use hydro boost so you can pic one complete with MC and just adapt ..

I would think something that come from Astro van or F250 witll work .. pretty sure that must have been done before .. the only issue to me it's

1. best ( easy to adapt ) hydroboost to use

2. have PS pump up to the task ( done in my case )

3. depending on enviroment posibly PS oil cooler ( done in my case )

4. more PS hoses to carry as spare ..

5. if your PS die, you'r done ..
