What ECU will operate the engine?

I have a aftermarket Accel DFI system from my last camaro upgrade that i had to change out b/c it could not drive big enough injectors to supply the motor. I figure it will work perfect, plus i already have a tuned LT-1 program for it. The wiring is time consuming but straightforward b/c I have done it before. I am mounting the ecu inside to keep it from the elements.

I'm sure you know it but others may not. The LT-1 is not your typical SBC. That's a very trick engine and coming from a Vette it has AL heads. IIRC, the Caprice/Camaro/Buick/Caddy versions all had cast iron heads. The AL heads are just one of the dozens of kewl things with the LT-1.

Sounds like you'll have fun during and after that swap.

Close, but the Camaro and Firebird got the Al heads too. :D

Cool project. Almost decided to pull the LT-1 outa my '96 Z28 after I hit a deer back in Oct. Was gonna either put it into a Cruiser or a '67 Impala (6sp woulda went into the Impala too). Decided to just fix the Camaro. WAY too much fun driving that car!

I hear ya on the opti-crap. I have a camaro hotrod and have had a ok history with opti-spark. For more precision timing control on it (it is supercharged with 18 pounds of boost) I negated the opti spark ignition trigger and switched to a Hall-effect crank trigger sensor on the crank.

I will probably try the GM 95'up upgraded opti spark or go with the MSD. If those dont work I will convert to a LS-1 style 8 coil system, these are becoming popular in the camaro world.

I was going to mention this. My dad had a supercharged 95 impala SS and he had nothing but trouble from the opti spark. Alot of the trouble is simply where its located on the engine. Tough to get to. Not sure if it will be easier on the cruiser but it sounds like a good project. Good luck.

Kirk,
I'm sure you researched the engine to tranny compatability, but can you explain? There's not going to be a problem with too much torque to the tranny right?

I feel the a442f tranny is FAR superior in design and strength when compared to the LT-1 GM tranny the 4L60E. I would have swapped the tranny too (maybe a 4L80E from a 3/4 chevy p/u)if it couldnt make the grade but I am sure it can. There is a great debate here on mud of the 442 vs the 343. I think they are both great trannys. If I do have issues b/c of the mileage on mine, i will change out to a wholesale automatic extreme A442F from austrailia. They are big block chevy and diesel chevy proven, which is more torque than the lt-1. Christo reps this brand in the U.S.

Christo used to rep this brand. I called last week, to far for customer support and a couple bad batches can spoil the fun...

wasn't there a fella who had an LT1 in his gorgeous 45 at Pismo, and busted his (weaker I imagine) transfer case pulling somebody cuz the engine was sooo powerful?

I have pics of it and saw them working on it at Hanna's. I think it was a faulty assembly of the orig t-case or something that contributed to the breakage but gobs of torque does help split a t case housing in half- yikes. I am not sure what caused the break- maybe a mix of factors.

That was a great story tho. The guy driving was helping pull someone and broke- another Toy owner donated an extra t case until he got a new one (I guess a Marlin was on the way before this whole incident). Good Cruiserheads save the day!

It's a beautiful truck

Kirk just got his Mark's Adaptor from Australia...we took pics the other day of the LT-1 and the adaptors too.

Kirk--post of the pics!!

I hope we are starting soon on this project.

Thanks for the TIG help on those upper rear adjustables.

Later.

Beno,

please make sure you guys keep a running list of costs so we can get an idea of what this whole project will cost. As im sure there are more then just a few people, myself included, with high mileage 80's who are considering this swap.
Thanks

Nice stuff Beno. I'll be interested in seeing this as well. I enjoyed that old thread about the 4.7L iForce swap from a Tundra and this looks exciting too

On the T-Case, note the truck was a fj45. It was probably a 4spd t-case. I have broke 3 of these with V8's in the past, they split in two right down the middle gear pin. High Porosity aluminum castings are the culprit. In the 80 the casting of the tcase is light years ahead in terms of metalurgy. I have faith it will hold up.

Beno posted the latest pics. Tearing out the I-6 soon.

Happy New year! Kirk

That flywheel is a centerforce aftermarket piece excess to my camaro project, I put an aluminum lightweight race flywheel in it. Funny how the opposite it what is desirable off road.

I'm just wrenching help/labor on this swap. Kirk's got the ideas and driving force behind this swap--he's a thousand times more experienced with this stuff than I'll ever be at this point. I'm still trying to figure out how relays work within electrical systems....  I hope to learn a lot by helping on this swap.

Yeah, I hope to document this swap--the hours involved, the parts needed, the money spent, etc. so you all can follow Kirk as he's blowing down a trail at 70mph!!

J/K.

Later.

Cool swap. I'd be interested to hear the final results. I still say a 1fzfe with a turbo is the shiznizzle.
