I'm heading up probably around late June, and I'd like to camp 1 night and do some trails. I'll be alone more than likely. Are there any events or meetups around that time?

I'm in an LX470 with the AHC still intact and the "sensor lift" done. With high mode I'm at about 2.5 inch lift total, and I have 33" A/T's, winch, front bumper, rear bumper, sliders, and an auto-locker in the rear. I'd like to do some moderate trails, but I will need to be able to drive the truck to Fayetteville afterwards, and then all the way back to north FL at the end of the week. I'll have tools with me so blowing a front diff or a tire I can handle, just don't want to puncture an oil pan or something. I don't have skid plates currently. I've run some blue trails at Windrock this past winter and felt pretty good on them.

I'm not looking to do any real steep ledges , but are some of the moderate trails doable without a spotter? Or is there usually enough people on the trails in the summer someone can help you?

Camping-

I've heard you can camp anywhere in the forest is that true? I'd be fine with just pulling up in a remote spot, but I'd do a camp ground if that isn't an option.

Thanks in advance from an NC native.

This coming weekend will be my first time out there, but I'm sure someone will chime in shortly.

Stay away from the Daniel trail and you'll be good with that set up if you know how to drive.

There is dispersed camping in the forest that is mostly on the access roads, meaning you’ll get dusted with filth unless it rains the day before you get there. Arrowhead campground is a very nice option in the forest. If your camping pockets are deep, you can rent one of 3 group camp sites for about $75-$100/ night and have roughly 30 sites to yourself.

Somebody here will probably be happy to hook up and at least wheel with you.

And to add to JV up there, ask again closer to June, the terrain can change due to conditions and culture. We can give you the latest info.

Thanks for the info.

I'm on the fence about Dickey Bell after watching some videos. If I could get a decent spotter I may be up for it. There was one section that looked iffy. This is the section I mean. He looks like he's on 35's....but is there a bypass for this section?

Will do thanks.

^don't listen to a word that kid says (minus the daniel trail comment......daniel is known by everyone as the hardest, nothing new there)......the 'yee yee'
shirt and the selfie vids tell us all we need to know about his choices and thoughts.

Most of uwharrie is not a '4' and you don't need a ZR2 and 35s. Most of the hard sections have bypasses. Stay off the skinny pedal and go slow. A wrangler on 31s and a level headed pilot will get you to 95% of the trails, barring any heavy rain.

I agree, that kid is full of s***. We took a bone stock Disco 2 and Jeep Wrangler Jk up those trails on highway tires this past fall. It's tricky, and you definitely need a spotter if you're going to try it like we did... But it's doable.

Daniel though? No way.

Cool thanks for that. I definitely had no plans for daniel based on what I've seen and read online haha. I wasn't sure about this one, but I'll try it if I can find someone to follow.

I agree with most of what folks are saying here. The only thing I'll add is that it's never really a good idea to wheel alone. There are plenty of trails at Uwharrie that your truck is easily capable of handling, but you just never know what could happen. It's always a good idea to have backup. That being said......generally at the time of year you're going, there are lots of people on the trails, so chances are someone will be along before too long if you do have trouble.

Also, if there's any chance you could turn that "late" June into "early" June, we have one of our biggest events of the year, the Carolina Relic Run, at Uwharrie on June 3rd - 6th. The event does focus on earlier model trucks, but all Toyota 4x4's are welcome to attend. See the pinned thread above.

Awesome thanks for the heads up! That's around my birthday so maybe the wife will let me get away with it.

In addition the the great advice everyone has shared, if you manage to tag along with a group or anyone from ONSC can get out with you, going up the back side of Daniel is fun and easily do-able in your rig. You'd be rewarded with a nice play area at the top, and a really nice view! Could even walk down to the ledges and watch the shenanigans.

Since the trail system is just about to open up, I don't know that anyone can say with certainty how the trails are this year. Some more torrential rains and a parade of yahoos always changes them...

Which side is considered the "back"?

Spot on Joe.

There's a little "rock garden" area with bypasses on the back side that any 4x4 can get to and play around, and then on up to the peak of the trail. Provides a little area to play that is super low risk and fun to test a stock or mild build rig.

The start of this video up to 2:37 is that area. Note, we all had capable rigs, but weren't aired down at all so it made it a little more fun.

After that is what used to be called "Kodak Rock" area on Rocky Mountain Loop. Closed now, sadly. I won there a few times, and Kodak won a few times. How I miss that little obstacle.

I mean how tough can Daniel really be if a Kia made it.... :flipoff2:

Kodak was awesome, I never conquered it myself (think I only really tried once in my 80 on skinny 33's), but: On one trip, I was right at Greg's front right tire as he hit Kodak. Those MT tires he was running - I'd never seen a tire flex and grip like his did. Not BFG's, Swampers, any brand. I thought when I grow up, I'm going to run those tires too!

Miss seeing your 40 out on the trail too, Ramon - always a treat watching how capable it is!

I've seen tahoes at the top of Daniel that came up the back side. Any modern 4x4 can do it easily if you pick the right lines.

The back of Daniel is even easier now. They took a bulldozer to some of the dirt sections and it’s like a driveway. Eazy pezy.

Yeah. World of difference from 2018 to Dec 2020. The dirt chutes had gotten to be hellish.
