Just now seeing this thread. James, I imagine you've got a handle on your truck by now. Nice to see another large 80 in the club....we've had a long history in the club with Jeff's, Logan's and my former rig. Nice thing about an 80 when you get up that high is you can still make it over things out there that others need lockers to do. After I added an aussie to my rig it made it amazing. When I regeared and went F/R ARB's it was even, better pretty much unstoppable.

Don't go lower or smaller tires. Only reason I can see for this if you absolutely hate the 80s street manners. I DD my truck for years with no ill effects and even drop it across the US with bad brakes and worn out bushings. Even like that the 80 design shone through and I maintained 70 on the hwy with 4.11 gears. It is very forgiving. Yours I imagine is even better on the street just with the extra power. Mine was a 3FE and it still could get up to 80 if I wanted even with tires weighing 114lbs a piece.

As far as lockers go, Put an Aussie in the rear for now but safe for ARB's or TJM's in the future. You can also do what logan did and put an Aussie in the front but you would either have to do a part time kit or just run manual hubs and CDL engaged (poor mans part time) I've driven his truck both on and off the trail quite a bit and it also drives fine.

I'd keep the flares but get used to popping them off for the trails or you will lose them to the trails.

Even with no experience off road an 80 makes you look like you know what you are doing.

Ironic: high lift jack and wheel/tire BOTH arrived the day after the trip.

Had my first wheeling trip in life yesterday at URE . Met some great guys with the ONSC club and had a blast . I tried trails I would have never attempted myself but with tons of help and guidance from Jason and Rice I actually made it to the top WOOOOO HOOOOO ! Needless to say I was very impressed with the friendship and knowledge from these guys and sent my membership dues for ONSC that afternoon . Hey Jason no problem on the slider motivation , progress man progress lol . Very nice to meet all of you and I'm sure we will meet again . Thanks so much for every ones help and acceptance of a noob .

I've owned this lx for about a year now and thanks to all the people on mud who made it possible to get it to the trails :). I didn't take any pics and I know that's not a good thing but thankfully others did .

If you've never used a Hi-Lift, find someone, in the club or elsewhere, that has been trained in proper, safe operation. They can be VERY handy when used correctly, and INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS when used improperly.

This concludes the Public Safety Message from your friendly neighborhood nanny.

EDIT: Check out this link for starters

James missed our trail tutorial but I hope you got the 60 inch variety.

And keep your bottle jack in the truck too. With extension :P

So the right side or line up the main climb on Daniel has become a bit rediculous. Usually up for the challenge but it just didnt look inviting at all to an 80 this time .... And it was 4pm at the end of a long day.

Besides I about got stuck at the very bottom on the cobbles and then spit out a couple hundred pound boulder from under the right rear where it came to rear under the tail pipe. I knew this location was trouble in day one and have drug my feet on reloction. Nothing like a lil carnage to motivate modifications. Right Steve ? :D

Oops , the new location is no better than before

I wish I'd gotten out to walk up the right side, but you're right about the 4:00 part.

Carnage is the best motivator for mods no question . Thanks for the push Jason:) . It was a great ride and I'm sorry you couldn't make it JohnVee . This noob had a smile glued to his face . I'm from Asheboro , only about 10 miles or so from URE . Good for a short limp home in the future probably . Ha

So time for me to throw a rod. :D

Charles does keep asking me if I am sure you don't have a diesel in that 80 ... ;)

Since this thread has morphed into "TCT" (The carnage thread) ....

This one wasn't so much a bummer because it happened, but rather I was on smooth stuff when it cut loose, apparently due to an earlier incident, and left me wishing I knew where I f'ed up.

Yep. She makes a LOT of torque on that one special cylinder.

Ouch. Those aren't cheap.

Don't worry Rice. Heather's truck has what we think is a wrist pin knock, since we got it. She tells people it's a diesel

"lady, your truck is making a lot of noise"

"Don't worry, it's a diesel"

"Oh, that explains it"
