Why should i trust anything on the 15 pages of this thread vs the Toyota engineers' recommendations?
Because the Toyota engineers already specified the heavier weight oils as used in ROW specs, but were then asked to compromise to improve fuel economy. Management probably posed this question to them, "how thin can we really go and most probably not run into lubrication issues". This was then studies, probability of failures which had already been calculated were re-reviewed along with the statisticians and accountants assessing the tradeoff versus increased warranty expenses. I would rather use a bit more gas and change me odds of engine longitivtiy to 99.9% vs 98%

So you're going to threadcrap this thread about making a modification to stock, but fully accept relocating your KDSS (which the same Toyota engineers designed) in the thread below?

No one is questioning Toyota engineers...this is a forum of enthusiasts sharing their collective knowledge and ideas. Move on if you don't have something more productive to contribute.

Wasn't trying to threadcrap. Didn't realize nonUS manuals recommended 5w-30.

As far as KDSS, yes, removing a troublesome system to mitigate and to improve reliability is my goal.

And asking questions is the most effective way to contribute. Take a chill pill and go decaf.

Where are the KDSS failures you speak of (outside of seized adjustment valves)?

Lets make sure we remain civil in this discussions. We allow other opinions. Once expre4ssed, let it go and don't beat a dead horse

yes. that. can't un-seize mine. dang rust.

(let's refrain from discussing KDSS in an oil thread... even though some oil ON the valves would have helped my situation) ;)

Completely reasonable point.

Too many here are simply switching viscosities without reason other than "more better". Without a sound reason, such changes may do more harm than good.

The major factor here that there is too little discussion on is prevailing ambient temperature and operating use case of the vehicle. That is what drives oil viscosities, to arrive at the optimal viscosities/pressure for operating temps of the engine.

For those in hotter southern states, closer to lattitudes of the middle east, that could be a compelling reason. But those in North America, in northern states with lower temperatures, but definitely so in winter are doing more harm than good with unnecessarily high oil pressure that results in lost MPG, HP, wear and tear on o-rings and engine seals.

And then there those going for further "goodness" of 5W-40?!?? Sure, maybe racing in the middle east.

It's hit triple digits daily here almost all summer.

Greetings ! I recently ran Amsoil 0W-30 in my 2016' with 85K miles. I ran this oil to 5800 miles (inadvertently went over 5k) in what I feel is "tougher" conditions than the norm. Heavily laden, sustained high speeds in elevation, slow crawling out west in 100F ambient, long idle times. I will post an update from Blackstone when I get the results back!!

Well, I did the switch to Penzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 last week just shy of 20K! Wanted to get some decibel readings prior but I had to drop it off at the dealer last minute to have the windshield replaced as well.

Truck definitely seem quieter and smoother at startup, and I haven’t heard that chatter noise since the switch.

NO RAGRETS!

Here is a Toyota letter from 2010
In that letter, they mention oil changes can now be extended to 10,000 miles under normal use. I don't know about anyone else here, but that is not recommended in my book at all and if you watch CarCareNut's video about it, he also mentions in his engine overhaul experience that it is a bad idea and will eventually lead to oil consumption issues.

People need to realize that although a great company, known for reliability, Toyota is also a business, and sometimes decisions are made purely from a business/sales point of view. Some businesses more than others, but none are immune to that fault.

Car Care Nut also states that even if you do oil changes every 5,000 miles instead of every 10,000 you're still coming out much better than the cost of a new engine.
I suspect that toyota is pushing these longer oil change intervals so they can claim lower cost of ownership by saying it costs less to maintain the car.

Resurrector here: If we are sending and trusting Blackstone with their analysis of our oil and it shows adequate TBN, what is to be gained by 5k vs 10k OCI's? Assuming top quality oil and filters.
