Thanks!

Thanks for the info Bad_Religion_AU. I'm going to try to see if I can find a full set of 60 series springs and do a similar set up. I noticed on the previous page of this thread that you said that you re-drilled the spring mounts. Could you maybe give me a little more detail on that? A pic or two would be great too if you had some! :)

I flipped my rears yesterday. I'll have a better idea of how it works after this weekend. Oh and in doing so, I increased my wheelbase by 3" in the rear, and the tires are centered in the wheelwells (that always bugged me that they were more towards the front). This mod necessitates a longer driveshaft and longer brake line.

Well, what'd you think MSAHR? Does it flex any better? (I'm sure it does though-If for no other reason than you like how it looks better! ;p) Let us know!

I know this thread old, but wondering if anybody has came across some new information/better information. I am planning on doing something this winter. If I can swing it, would it be best to get a set of longer springs made?

I'm on this too. I'm running Dakar FJ60 2.5" lift rears on the front of my FJ40 with a shackle reversal and some 4" lift Chevy 52" rears on the rear of the 40. Do it again, I would run the Dakar FJ60 rears on both ends. Im running a SB 350 so its a little lighter on the front. The flex is awsome. It's as good as some SOA's without the height plus I have more compression for fast pace desert style driving.

So how soft is the ride?

So what are you guys running for shocks on your sprung unders? I need to buy some. I flexed out both front and rear and measure about 12" compressed and 20" (center to center on the bolts/studs) flexed using a floor jack.

Hi All:

James, the only thing I would do different when installing 60/70 Series rear leaf springs under a 40 Series would be to change the fixed end hanger to a 60 or 70 Series spring hanger. Although the 60/70 Series rear springs will fit the 40 Series spring hanger it is a bit too narrow, causing excessive wear on the shoulders of the spring bushings.

For longer leaf springs, some folks have started using J**p Cherokee XJ rear leave springs. These are supposedly quite flexy.

Regards,

Alan

Never Jeep. I'm running the medium rate on the Dakars and it's perfect. Also running Rancho 9000 at 13" travel, 5" compression, 8" droop with poly bumps.

Thanks, Fellows!
So it is not worth going to the trouble of just flipping the 40 springs, right? Also, if I flip the front I would probably have to cut the front fenders, right?

Hi All:

Well, "flipping" the front 40/45 Series front springs should move the front axle a bit forward.

Yes, you will probably need to at least trim the front fenders if you move the front axle forward.

Alan

I have been thinking about how to do just that. With my front springs flipped I need to clearance the fenders. Then there is the turn signal wiring. One good compression those wires will get ripped right out.

Hi All:

Steve, I removed the front fender-mounted turn signals when I (excessively) trimmed the front lip of the fender.

There are now aftermarket flashers mounted to the side "aprons" just aft of the hood hold-downs.

Alan

Thanks Alan. I'll take a look at the next meeting. If I can make it :)

havnt read whole thread about d shaft ,but buy a used front one and have it shortened to fit the rear should be cheaper.

Thought I'd post up the spua suspension I just finished on my 40. Am stoked with how its all turned out. Ride is beautiful, and travels sweet too. Only dramas is a fair bit of bodyroll on road, but its bearable for now I think.

Specs are
1260mm (49.6") long front leafs 4" lift (bout 4.5" longer then std.)
1340mm (52.8") long rear leafs 4" lift (bout 7.8" longer then std.)
2" extended shackles
12" travel bilstein 5125s all round
High Clearance U-Bolt Plates
Rear diff back 5" from standard, front forward 1"

Edit: Should add, bumpstops have been spaced down 3" on all corners.

Some pics.

Still got to finish of the rear guards, and am getting tube front fenders made, then hopefully some 37s.

More details and pics in my buildup thread.

Just some update pics of mine since page 3....All is working really well. Rear seems to be working a lot better with more weight bac there now (fuel cell and spare tyre) Only drama is getting caught up on the front shackles occasionally.

Hi All:

Looking good Twisty !!

My FJ40 is currently sitting with a 100 inch (254 CM) wheelbase, which looks to be about the same as yours?

Alan

TWISTY - your wagon has a really nice stance.

What's the belly-height? With the extended shackles - what do you reckon is the total height increase you gained?

What have you got in mind to combat the body roll - anti-sway bars?

Update...

I wound up buying a set of new Alcan springs at a used price. Since the po had them built for a heavier setup, I wound up taking a couple of leaves out, but am pretty happy with them as they sit now. I am however, planning on sending the rear packs back to Alcan at some point- and having them make me a couple of longer leaves for both rears so I can get some more droop and a touch more height with a little extra beef in the drivers side rear to combat "cruiser lean."

Another "Go team SUA!"
