With the shackle hanger in the stock location the shackle angles way back. A stock length shackle might just swing back and rest on the frame so I used a longer shackle. It seems like this angle might contribute to more sag but I dont know that they didnt hold their lift.

Not sure about lifted spring lengths. Stock 55 springs should be about 3 inches longer than 40 and have a centered pin vs 3 inch offset on the 40. Gives you same result as flipping the 40 spring but with a longer spring.

Dont think you can go any longer than this without moving the shackle hanger.

I saw one fail on the rear of a 60 coming in to Buck Island Lake two years ago. It broke right at the 90 degree corner, dropped the springs, ripped out the brake lines and generally made a mess of things. It was a fatigue failure that had started in a small crack in the corner which appeared to have been introduced in the bending process during manufacturing. The other corner had a similar fatigue crack about a quarter of the way through the section. It appears the part is just bent to shape, which practically guarantees it will eventually fail at that corner. If they forged the shape they could get around that problem, but it would cost more.

i have the 4+ U bolt flip kit the front is great, but the rear is where you will run in to trouble, i have talked to mark as we both are having the same problem. I think that im going to let him chim in on this because he is a better with words then myself.

Hey Rod howz the re-springing of rubiez stable mate coming? I bet you could even post a quick pic or two.

I don't remember whose is it, but I was just looking at a pic I saved of a dark green metallic FJ40 with decals and lots of lights, possibly in South America, that had portal axles installed. Probably Unimog axles. It's a SUA with a very large amount of clearance. Nicely done.

Well I will give this a shot,

1973 FJ-40 been through a few suspensions.......

When I got it, had some rancho/cheap spring set, rode like a tank, had Rancho junk shocks and Con a Fer shackles. Ran it for a few months, till my kidneys gave out, standard junks springs, No military wrap, four thick leaves.....

Next I upgraded to the SOR FJ-40 4" lift kit, New springs, bushings and shackles with Pro Comp shocks.......................

Springs same thick rough riding crap, sold them to a buddy who pulled a leaf and loves them, but I broke two and bent a third on various trails here in SoCal.
I was running the U-Bolt skid plates, they ended up dinged bent and beat to hell but survived, some serious burrs from the rocks. Did hang them up every once in a great while.

Getting tired of limping off the trail with a broken spring(Big Bear and Moab) I looked for some better built springs, CCOT had the HFS line, bought them alone with no shocks, ran them and was ok with them. Found that I was bottoming my shocks, So I gave MAF a call and got four OME shocks set up for 5" of lift, 4" of spring with 1" of shackle, added MAF 4+ shackles. The ride is amazing and I rarley hang a wheel, Had the Downey front shock tower add on's and found that I did not need them.
Last year added MAF 4+ U bolt flip kit to the front, but kept the rear U Bolt skids, dont like the exposed shock for the rocks I play in.

Running both 33 12/50 MTRs or 315 Toyo MT's

mine isn't the ultimate by any means. basically is 55 series front springs in the front, 55 series rear springs in the rear. rear pack is softened up (load leaf + shortest in the pack removed), and the front pack has had some of the shorter leaves removed and replaced with longer leafs.
shackles made to suit the spring length (i used shackle length = spring length + 1 inch - distance between spring hangers). shocks were measured to suit.

oh, and i redrilled the spring perches to move the front and rear diff further apart as well

first pics is when it was still running stiff arse 40 series front springs in the front.

second is the only time it's been out since the 55 front packs... that was the biggest ledge i could find to ramp it onto. it's got more in it. and the pics are deceptive. they're 36 swampers on it there, 33 Mickey T's on the first 2 pics

as for "losing lift". spring lift is pretty useless. no matter if your standard height, or 6 inch lifted, if your bump stops are in the same place, you'll hit an oversize tire on the bodywork with both when the rig flexes.

Thought I'd post up the spua suspension I just finished on my 40. Am stoked with how its all turned out. Ride is beautiful, and travels sweet too. Only dramas is a fair bit of bodyroll on road, but its bearable for now I think.

Specs are
1260mm (49.6") long front leafs 4" lift (bout 4.5" longer then std.)
1340mm (52.8") long rear leafs 4" lift (bout 7.8" longer then std.)
2" extended shackles
12" travel bilstein 5125s all round
High Clearance U-Bolt Plates
Rear diff back 5" from standard, front forward 1"

Some pics.

Still got to finish of the rear guards, and am getting tube front fenders made, then hopefully some 37s.

More details and pics in my buildup thread.

Dam, some of these rigs give SOA's a run for their money, especially treeroots rig. I would like to see how some people have mounted their shocks up top in the rear with their spring flips.

It will take a lot of work to make a sua flex out 19"

MR.Manny has a sua with fj55 rear springs front a rear of his 40, and is by far the most flexible 40 I have seen.

wow Grizzly, that's quite a complement...

LC advanced handling spring plates...bought the last set from Ross, worth every penny :)

myfj-2a.jpg

btb SR kit (nice product, can't say the same for service)

12" bilstein 5125
ford towers in front
top mounts were moved in for the rear
measure your flex before selecting your shock length...you will thank me later.

2.5" safari/pinnacle fj55 REAR lift springs on ALL 4 corners.

extended shackles
Since the rear appears to have sagged some, I will prob. replace w/drakar fj60 lift springs...possibly alcans?

need to extend the rear bump-stops to reduce lugs hitting against tub at mucho flex.
like how well 35"s tuck inside wheel-wells...

I contemplated, and even started gathering parts for a SOA down the road.

I'm pretty pleased with how she wheels, so for now...all I can say is "GO team SUA!" :D

Hi All:

"Manny," nice post!

Eshu,
front set was used from Morgan, rear set was purchased from rockymountainsusp :
Rocky Mountain Suspension Products, Landcruiser suspension lift kits

(even though the description says 4" lift, they are 2 1/2" lift springs)

If your looking for some additional WB or lift, I would recommend going the Alan route :D

Hi All:

Yes, this is an interesting thread!

Here is a pic of my rig with OME Dakar medium-load 60 Series springs in the rear (flipped.)

I plan on doing some sort of front spring swap/flip in the coming months; should prove interesting! :D

Alan

latest pics of my SUA.. i would like to think i'm done mod'ing the suspension now
front = 75+40 leaves + longer shackles + 10" bilstein 5125's (moved diff 2.5"fwd)
rear = 75+60 leaves + longer shackles + 10" bilstien 5150's + rear hanger flip (moved diff 2.5" back)

P1010587.JPG

can't seem to get any decent flex out of the rear though

andrewfarmer, there's something I really like about your truck. On second thought, there's a bunch. Nice rig, man !!!

I'm pretty happy with my set-up, 40 series 2 1/2" fronts flipped, rear 60 series 2 1/2" rear springs flipped, using stock shackle hangers and 6" center to center home-built shackles netted me a 45* shackle angle, very nice ride and flex. A visit to my 74 Porn site(thanks, Bull ?!?) will explain.
