If you could buy the ultimate 80 is this the spec.?

I would like to buy a diesel but don’t know diddly about them

So, then, what is?

Ultimate spec is entirely dependent on your preferences.

Mine would probably be swapped to a Japan-built Toyota V8 with the A750 transmission. Personally, while I appreciate the simplicity and range of diesels, it's just not worth the associate headaches. Gasoline is just too easy to find.

It very much depends on your preferences.

If you want reliability, look towards the diesel models.
If you want power, look towards the petrol models.
If you want something with a luxury feel that's not going offroad much, get the VX models or a Lexus equivalent.
If you want a rugged offroad vehicle, get the most basic model you can find.
If you like something that's mechanically simple, look towards a manual.
If you like something that's simple to drive, look towards an auto.
If you're comfortable doing work yourself and don't need to worry about lead time for parts, hunt your favorite model from around the world.
If you prefer to pay someone to do the work for you or can't afford downtime, stick to models you can find domestically.

And of course, if you don't have lots of spare time/money, don't get an 80 in the first place.

In full transparency I actually have a nice 95 80 and been thinking about getting another, hence the reason for asking. I see a lot of post about folks going Gaga for diesels so just enough intrigue to make me ask. I have even considered a 100 as I have yet to own one of them

In that case if it's a secondary vehicle and a curiosity, I don't think anyone could fault the 1HD-FT. One of the finest engines ever made. Probably the main things to work out then for you would be how much does auto vs manual matter for you, how much offroad use do you see it doing, and how deep are your pockets.

Thx good info
A manual would be cool, so where do you find such a beast and how deep are deep pockets?!

State-side? No idea. I'm in Australia, so I can just hop on the local classifieds. Here's a couple:
Doesn't do you much good over there though. I suspect you'll be stuck importing such a beast yourself. I'd strongly suggest you see if you can find a way to test-drive something similar there. If you don't know much about diesels, you might want to figure out if you want a diesel in the first place before you drop a significant five figures on one. Resale value will be good though, so if cash isn't a barrier, you could probably take a punt on it and maybe even flip it for a profit over there if it isn't for you.

A lot depends on personal preferences.

Diesel will cost a bomb at entry. But resale will be high too.

In USA, you'll have a hard time finding specialists to work on the diesel.

With new exhaust, upgraded turbo, intercooler, and fresh injectors, and fuel pump tune up and can add 30-50% power increase. Spend a bit more, and double the power output.
Driving a tuned up turbo diesel is vastly different to a stock one, and can rival a V8, particularly in terms of torque. Tuned, they are anything but slow. It's chalk and cheese compared to the 1fz-fe 80s.

Ultimately, I'd want . . .
a 5 speed trans, not auto.
Lockers (but if you need them, aftermarket has good optics)
Lose the funky JDM brush bar and the goofy side mirror.

That one looks pretty clean inside, under the hood, under the floor. Shame about the cracked dash.

Hard to see how much lift it has, but it's been done on the cheap. No caster correction, no extended links on sway bars, no name shocks? I'd guess no extended brake lines.

Could be a pretty good starting point for a build

What is the best source for finding a good one? And who are the specialists?
Thx

chapel gate regularly has listings in the Classifieds. Seems to make it pretty simple for you and has a good reputation. Out of England I think? But Canada seems like a good choice for you.

I like the Canada option but do not have a clue as to the approach? I’ll take any advice?

No idea where to find one in USA, and "good one" is subjective to your own personal preferences, budget, wants etc

In terms of shops near you with solid knowledge of diesel cruisers, post up in the diesel tech section of the forum.
Is Motor City Detroit?
Diesel tech section is a good place to ask questions and read up on diesel tech stuff.
Also, ask in the clubhouse section relevant to your location via the drop down menu

There's this place in Seattle but it seems their lot has more vans than Land Cruisers these days.

Imports regularly show up in the local Craigslist adds.
