If it is done in the morning time i could probably help.

Wow that is a little further away than I was hoping. If you want to schedule something I will help get the word out and I'll see if I can make it.

How busy is the road? Not safe for kids?

Jeremy

No probably not safe for kids under say 10.

It's the road that goes into Jones Gap. Really nice road that follows a stream the whole way. I usually come up early and do the pickup and then Becca and the kids come out after and we go hangout at Jones Gap State Park for the day.

We also usually eat hot dogs at the F-mart if we do it on Sat. Usually takes an hr to clean up if we have 4 or more people. It's going to suck this time because we have not had one in maybe a year.

We need to have a trash pickup! Bad.

Maybe this coming weekend?

Marshall I don't think we are even really tied to the program any more; other than the sign showing our name. I don't believe we have had contact with the adopt a highway program in years.....

with that said though it certianly doesn't hurt to do a clean up as I am sure the road can use it.

Hey JP anyway you can find out. That was a great place to have one and it was a lot of fun doing something for the community.

sure......but we don't need any offical recognition to do something good for the community:meh:

You need to contact them. We do ours with the scouts 3 times a year, and they really want to know how much trash we picked up. On another note, without a scheduled date, you might have to haul the trash away your self.

I talked to them this morning. We are still in the system. Last time we picked up was in 08. For shame, For shame.

I have a safety meeting to attend on Thursday before we can get back rolling. At that time I'll pick up bags and new vests.

Contact for future reference is

LOL - well that is what happens when we can't get anyone to return a phone call or email. We picked up numerous times when I was Pres and I know several times since then. Often we hauled away the bags to make sure they weren't left on the side of the road for months.

They have certain days now. So if we want to pick up trash it has to be on one of their days. Maybe we can talk to someone who is around the area that might let us haul it to them. Like the fire department or Jones gap.

Can we let the bags sit on the side of the road for a few days until whomever can pick 'em up? There is a county landfill (I think) before you hit Marietta on the west side of 276. Maybe we could leave the bags there.

I went to the saftey training meeting yesterday. Have to say I learned a lot. First we now have new vests. They have reflective stuff on them. We will be styling with them on.

Also our sign is old. You will love this. So the top sign is the adopt-a-highway announcement. It's made by the state prison. The middle one is made by some company in Columbia and the bottom one is made in the upstate. Lol It takes like 9 months for all of them to get the signs produced and up. The new sign is kind of cool because it converts to a sign that says Litter pickup ahead with a big orange background. All we have to do is go flip the sign down when we are picking up trash.

I also have new trash bags. We need to find the pickers that David H bought for us. I don't know who has those.

They have 4 scheduled pickups a year. One is next weekend which I'm going to try to schedule for UC.
The rest are all scheduled on a day we already have something planned so we can just call them and get them to pick it up or we can find a place to dump it ourselves. I say we find a place because having our pickup on a date they are not scheduled means SCDOT has to stop what they are doing and go pick up the bags. They have a total of 47 people working on roads for the whole county. I'm sure we can haul them off ourselves.

Once we pick it up we have to send them an e-mail stating.

Group name
Contact Person
Phone #
County
Section of Road Cleaned
Date Cleaned
Total Miles Cleaned
Total # of Volunteers
Total Bags Filled

If we ever need more bags they are at the SCDOT office off Saluda Dam Road.

Some interesting facts. They collected 38,000 lbs of trash last year in the county. There are like 60 groups like us in Greenville County. We have probably one of the most scenic roads to pick trash up on.

So are we ever going to have another pickup? If not I'm going to call them and tell them we are out. Sad as we have been doing this for at least 10 years. That section of road going into Jones Gap state park deserves someone that is going to keep it clean.
