Thermostat is definitely opening based upon temps above. If it were not, you would have overheated badly. It is possible that someone has put in a 160 degree thermostat.

If you let it cool overnight and start it cold then shoot the top of the thermostat housing and top radiator hose every few seconds, you'll see when it opens as the temps will go up quickly when it opens.

I was Doing some work on the 4runnrer. Water pump thermostat radiator etc etc. took me a couple of hours to get everything together but it is back on the road.

Nothing fancy but patched a crap-ton of exhaust leaks on the 80. Sounds more gooder now.

Just switched out the 2 degree pinion shims for 4 degree pinion shims. Much more aligned. Should help a lot with the 60 mph vibrations. Rusty U bolts needed a ton of strength and a breaker bar. Took way longer than it should have. Made me wish I had a compressor big enough to fully utilize my impact wrench. That's gotta be next on my list.

I suppose I could use the word growl to describe it. Off throttle only. Torque applied, it's fairly silent.

Friggin pinion bearing. you think a replacement is in order?

Classic signs of outer pinion bearing wear on a low pinion design. Off throttle, the load is on the outer bearing as the ring gear try's to pull the pinion into the differential case ....

...recently been experiencing something similar on the 4Runner. I've been slowly coming around to the fact that it might be front diff related. These last few post do not make me smile :(

I got the bell cranks unfrozen and the parking brake working on the pickup as I failed the NC safety inspection. Now I have to figure out how to adjust the cable in the cab as I think I yanked it so hard that the parking brake handle is out maybe a 1/4" now and the parking brake light stays lit all the time unless I push it in by hand. Going in reverse in gear or not in gear and pulling the handle doesn't seem to tighten it at all no matter how many times I do it.....:)

Got a buck that says the issue is still in the pinion bearing. Vibration AND a "growl" or just vibration?

You guys getting shudder/vibrations above 60 MPH?

If so, very weird, as that is my issue right now :)

Vibes 55-70
Intermittent grumble at any speed but most noticeable at 25 or slower.
Just this Friday heard a chirping directly related to wheel speed. Can be heard with window down up to 15

^^Supposedly, if either pinion bearing (front / rear) is failing or loose, you can shake the drive shaft and you will get play. I hadn't thought of it until I read your note, but I have tried almost EVERYTHING else and still feel it a bit - very similar description.

I was on my back Sunday, and I can't feel any play. I suppose this is good, but I feel like I could go in several directions at once now.

I would be surprised (not shocked, but surprised) if a pinion bearing was going out on a fairly new 4Runner.

14yrs and 166,000+ miles...only newish at this point. I've been wondering if the axle break may play into it. There's a pretty tight correlation with the timing. I had initially thought that the new wheel bearing might have been screwed up at the machine shop that did the install, but I can't get symptoms to repeat with left-right turning of the vehicle
I thought the drive shaft might need a rebuild. I grease it up every 3,000 miles, on the last one there was a bit of water that squeezed out ahead of the grease...

166k miles on a Toyota diff is young in my opinion.

U-Joints are a really good cheap/easy first place to start, however, I would only consider if the vibe you're talking about is a straight line on throttle/off throttle repeatable event. If what you are experiencing is somehow manifest in left/right steering I would rule out U-joints.

Just in case your preventative maintenance list is too short .... The 80 left me on the side of the road this morning; in the rain and with my 6 year old. Culprit was not a bad fuse but a bad fuse connection. It revealed itself in that the fuse was still good but had clearly gotten hot (melted plastic). Because 80's use blade fuses and not buss fuses I needed a way to clean down inside the contact slots .... an old metal nail file with the pointed tip clipped off did well.
