Two speed rear heater. (1 Viewer)

Anybody have pictures of the resistor and wiring. Never heard of a two speed rear heater in a FJ40. Doesn't mean Toyota did make them. I should check the rear heaters I have stored away. Plus check any wiring diagrams. But I thought the FJ62 was the first two speed rear heater. I know the pre 74 used the same two speed switch as the front heater. 73s even had the cool switches marked front and rear.:cheers:

On the outside the heater looks exactly the same, other than having two wires coming out of it. Inside, however, has an extra resistor:

You may also notice the coolant in the bottom of the heater... turns out that this heater core had a leak.:crybaby: Although there were no signs of a previous leak, 15+ years sitting in a box in someones basement wasn't good for the core.:bang:
 
What is the best way to store a heater core? I removed the rear heater and lines from my '77 and just drained all fluids and stuck it in the attic. I also have 2 complete front heaters from parts trucks and another front core that I'd like to preserve for future needs. Thanks

This one was covered in crap and stored in the crawl space of an old house. For all I know, it had leaks in it when it was stored in the basement.

My better rear heater has ridden around in the back of a 40 for 36 years... don't recon it matters all that much.

Not sure how dry a attic is in MS. I do know in AZ put it away dry and keep it from getting wet and you should be good to go with metal parts. It's rubber and plastic parts that get tricky. Those I store inside the house. My wife just loves all the boxes full of Land Cruiser parts all over the house.:rolleyes:
 
Reviving an old thread: Anyone know what the resistance/wattage resistance of this two speed rear heater resistor is? I don't have access to my rear heater to measure it's current draw to calculate this...

My July 74 came stock with a single speed rear heater. The replacement one I've found uses a 4 ohm resistor to make it two speed. Does anyone know what year(s) had the two speed heater?

The housings look the same and I've made one working motor out of the two (parts are the same).
 
Blowing off the dust on an old thread... how time flies. Haven't decided where to put the speed selection switch... kinda thinking I'd like independent control from the front fan.

Higher priority is getting the rig back on the road while I've got some summer left.

Can't see the lock, but it's likely because you've only got 3 posts. Things open up a bit once you buy a silver star or have more posts. I believe they're measures in place to limit spammers.

No idea the vehicles... but Steve will know if anyone. I'm sure if he scrapped a knuckle he'd bleed gear oil.
 
Checked the original thread... looks like the moderators have locked the thread down. Don't know their reason. They don't want threads to turn into want adds... classifieds are for that. You might also have better luck in the Diesel section of the forum. Being we have more Diesels here Parts suppliers here in Canada will be more familiar with them.

Update to my post. Bought a 10/69 1970 model in July 2011. Wasn't until a few years I realized it has the two speed rear heater. Will have to check some 78/79 wiring diagrams. From the 74 model on the rear heater came on with high speed position on the front blower switch. 8/80 when moved to under the center console their was a separate switch for the rear heater on top of the console for a few months, then back to the front heater switch. The opening on the console just got a plastic plug.
 
My 10/72 FJ40 has a "fan front" and a "fan rear" switch (fan rear switch is rare I think). Both are two speed and wired like that shown for the 72/73 FJ55. Since the rear heater is an option there is a spare LR wire with a female bullet connector on it that sticks out of the harness in that area. My rear heater was not hooked up originally so I used that wire for the CEL for the 3FE.

10/72 is a 73 model. That was the only model year with those switches. 74 model front heater changed and rear heater operated when the front switch was on high. Switched changed to fan pull like the one on the left. Always thought the 73 knobs were cool and collected a few sets years ago when FJ40s were fairly common in junkyards.
 
I bought a 50 watt 4 ohm resistor. Done a quick hook up. Runs about half speed. Resistor was warm to touch after about minute of running. Wondering if a 150 watt resistor would be better?

my 73 that i bought new had a 2 speed rear heater .ive also sold several on ebay over the years
 
FJ40 2 speed rear heaters; I owned a new '71 40 and later bought another which I still own. Here's the deal; they were standard with the 2 speed rear. Low is Puff, high is Puff Puff in the heat department. I always got a kick about how little air those dudes move. However in an old 40 on a cold day all heat is welcome! With under hood heater valve open, switch high, how many times while going down the road on a cold day did I reach back over the seat with the right arm, hand over the heater outlet to see how much heat was emanating from that back heater... and wonder.....is it on?
I think maybe a 1970's Disco hair blow dryer pumped out more heat than our rear heaters do. But they were still way superior than what jeep offered....Not even an option.

I've had kids 'rubber' boots melt on my rear heater... I may have to try roasting marshmallows next time I'm out since campfires are forbidden.

It works especially well for rear passengers if you throw an old sleeping bag over their legs. The front heater blows hot enough air, even with the roof off, to nearly burn my leg. One of these days I need to refurbish the foam in the front heater. Right now it leaks more air than it blows.
 
If I could track down one of those rear heat switches it would solve my delema of where to put the control. However, I'll likely just mount a toggle switch on the back of the Tuffy console (above the heater). Only problem would be if the kids in the back couldn't agree on the temperature and started fighting over it... can't win.
