I would agree that a Garrett would be awesome but I would also have to deal with that quicker spooling and a stock computer trying to keep up with AFR's which could actually hurt me on my setup.
I already have to be careful if I punch it because that boost will come fast and I am watching the AFR's go lean for a second until the computer goes open loop.
Ohh, yeah..that's an excellent point. No ability to tune for tip-in enrichment. How lean are you seeing and at what boost level before the ECU catches up?

Heh yeah, around $1600. I have a Garrett GT3071 in my car though and I have to say the difference in spool between that and a journal bearing TD05 20G was just ridiculous.

That's on 2 liters, not 4.5, but note the power difference and spool difference between a cheap turbo and a quality turbo (both top runs were at 21psi, one on race gas and one on E85). I do not have any experience with eBay ball bearing turbos, though - if they're legit ball bearing setups, I might try one someday for giggles. :)

The difference in spool between a journal and a ball-bearing turbo is negligible in my experience, assuming all other variables are equal.

Maybe it was more the design and tech in the turbines than it was the bearings, but if you look at my dyno sheets the difference is absurd. :)

If I get into it you can see an AFR of 16 at 4 psi for a second before the computer dumps it to 10-11
Oy. Yeah, that's really lean.

For what it's worth, there's a big thread over on the turbo forums about the Chinese GT45 and how well it's worked.

Mtncruiser, I used to live in Columbia for a short while. I worked for a company who helped build the Nephron Pharmaceutical plant over in West Columbia, and I lived in the Shandon neighborhood just off Devine Street. I loved Columbia, and I really loved this particular sushi restaurant in the Vista. I also have family there, so I visit from time to time. I'd really like to meet up with you and checkout your turbo setup. I live in Atlanta now so Columbia still isn't all that far away. I've got a turbo in the works as well for my '99 4Runner that I, like you, have slowly been piecing together, and I'd really like to compare notes.

I came up with 2165$$ Total for the parts mentioned. Thats using the better wastegate mentioned, and using the 84$ updated price on the cat. THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!

You know, hindsight is 20/20 and I'd have to say that one thing I may consider doing differently if I were to do it all again would be to buy a turbo interface that utilizes the stock manifold. You will avoid a lot labor and hassle and $$$$.
If you're looking at giving your motor a lot more power, you can and it means just giving it a little bit of boost. You don't need to go overboard.

This setup "a turbo that utilizes stock manifold" - did you find one or were you going to fabricate/weld the stock manifold to a flange or ?

This, plus not using a blow off valve , could save some money on a build

A good J-pipe like the one EMS made is a good solution. It maintains the proper firing orders for twin scroll turbo's and flows well.

I wouldn't run without a BOV.

Why? They're completely unnecessary.

Well, dammit scotty, you got any more bad news for me tonight? Like you just sold your last j pipe setup to some guy in India?
:flipoff2:

You dont "need" one but you stress your turbo and overpressure you charge pipe without one. Can blow apart charge pipe and/or lose spool on your turbo real fast. You dont need an expensive one, I had a cheap HKS knock off on one of my honda's that worked fine. Think I bought it for 50 bucks.

I wouldnt say unnecessary but you dont HAVE to run one. Blown engines can be fun, sometimes
