I took an opportunity to get a free spare tire carrier that was slightly "tweaked", cut out the middle tire mount area, and was able to straighten the frame out.

I disassembled the hinges, and put in new longer pins. Changed the pivot and solid sides of the hinges to allow the carrier to be removeable and still allow the base of the hinge to remain attached to the tub (and still keep alignment).

Turned around the catch handle, and mounted to the passenger side of the tub for the "dual" carrier look. After some cutting, and welding, I ended up with a nice jerry can holder for the 40...

Pics follow....Before and after....

Supports hold the jerry cans out further holding the weight nicely.

Nice, way to recycle.

I did the same thing except I made a cooler rack. worked great

Concept works well, mate, and I could've used the extra 2 x 20L cans to get more range. Great job

If you go this way with the full body, make sure you weld in the OEM support brackets inside the body panel. I'd post a pic of the back end of my shorty with a reversed tubular spare wheel bracket on the RHS but it appears I've exceeded my upload limit as a rookie - so no pic until I figure out how to delete my previous uploads.

Cheers

There are left hand and right hand tube style tire carriers, but don't ask me when and why they changed sides.

I cut a left hand carrier and fabricated a right hand carrier for a second spare, this was on first FJ40 in 1980.

Cheers from Switzerland

Real nice!! Im lurking around, thinking of a few ideas, and BAM!! Found my idea!!
Question:

1) Does this extra "carrier" get in the way of pulling a trailer?

2) I know you got to open and close it all the time getting in the back, but beside from that any other issues with having two of them??

3) got any more pics of it?

I ran dual spares many years ago by adding a tire carrier from a 68 onto my 76 FJ40. I was a poor twentysomething and went through a quite a few cheap tires off road. Never had any issues with trailering or clearance though. Later on I bought some decent tires and decided to swap the 2nd spare for a Jerry can mount. This is the current incarnation.

I was wanting a Jerry can / cooler rack to mount out back of the 40, but I just couldn't spend big dough on a bumper with dual swing outs.o_O

So I think Im going to go the Cheap route and use original parts to make my dual swing out.:hillbilly::hillbilly::hillbilly::bounce::bounce:
