They are on Hwy 178 towards brevard. Laurel Valey Reserve. You go in a bottom and its on the left. Rather curvy roads. Only open certain times of the year. I

know how to get there but its hard to give specifics.

This would be the Horsepasture trail. It closes in early Jan, usually the 15th
and will re-open this spring. It is now open from one end to the other so
you won't have to turn around. It is a gravel road suitable for even 2wd now.
Nice scenery and Jump Off Rock is a great pic nic spot.
Turn in at Laurel Valley Lodge on #178. Comes out at Cleo Chapman road
near #11.
This USED to be the prime off road area until the Gov't "fixed and improved" the thing. :(

Alex, all the criteria mentioned above is there, with one slight exception, fishing. We do cross a lot of small streams, but we are so high up in the watershed that most of the streams do not contain trout. There is one, that does contain native trout, but they are small and VERY hard to catch. However, if you decided not to wheel and drive back down the mountain 10 minutes there is the Tuckasegee river with plenty of awesome trout fishing. Also, just up the road 30 minutes is lake glenville with more fishing.

When i get a little more cash i'll post up a trip and those who want to go can come see for themselves if this would make a good club route. I think it will.

thought i would throw up a few more pictures.

Guys I have lurked on this site and enjoyed perusing your trip pics. for over 3 months now-without posting, but this thread has me extremely interested. I wanted to know if you would be kind enough to open this trail ride up to me and my 1968 EB. It is mildly built with a 2" suspension lift, 33" BFG MT's, 4.11 gears, Ford 9" & Dana 30 with front and rear Detroit Truetracs, 289 V8 carburated and a NP435/Dana 20 tranny & t-case combo, which give me a crawl ratio of around 68:1. I would absolutely love to tag along on this trip if you would have me.

For SURE! we are all 4x4 lovers here........ I personally love the early Broncos so you are more than welcome :D.

The time frame for this trip is mid-march, although we might be doing a scouting run sooner to check it out. Send me your e-mail and I will keep you informed or just keep checking the board here.

Man, that EB sounds sweet! You are always welcomed to wheel with UC.
We don't discriminate. :grinpimp:
Heck we've even wheeled with Jeeps.
Bring it on down Raleigh Bronco.
ps: post more often. ;)

Thanks guys, though I'm not sure about wheeling with Heeps ;)

As I mentioned earlier, I enjoy your club pics. and rig pics.-some of you have done some great things with those older cruisers. I am also partial to older model 4X4's. Great work! I will shoot Clemson Cruiser an email to keep me in the loop on this excursion. PS. Don't hold it against me- I am a graduate of NC State. :)

Your'e welcome to join us, Raleigh.

Please remember fellers: Although I'm certain there will be some major off-roading opportunites on this expedition, I ask that the spirit of this venture should be about adventure and time to relax, camp, fish, etc. All stock vehicles should be able to make this trip so as not to leave any member with a pristine truck or daily driver out of this event.

We dont have to hold that against you, we whipped you at your place this yr.

Thanks for the reminder. However I believe State will finally have a new stud QB next season in Brent Schaffer, so I expect to give you a return trip to the woodshed, ala 2002/Death Valley.

That might be kinda' tough. I know that my stock 80 (w/out lockers) made this trip the first time. However, i did get just a couple of scratches, not bad, but it did get a few scratches.

I believe the best thing would be for me to get a scouting trip together end of Feb, beginning of March and let some upstate guys make the call on whether stock and "prestine" rigs will make it.

A new QB wont help you when your line is still soft you still cant run the ball and your best D lineman is turning pro early. Meanwhile we are only losing 4 starters from our 8-4 team. We also have 3 4-star qbs on our depth chart behind charlie, and the acc's best freshman rb. Come down for the game though and we shall see and enjoy a frosty

I think we should def. do a scouting trip........ the earlier the better, but I understand that it might be a while before you are able to make the trip again. It would be ideal to go sometime in feb. so that if it isn't suitable for the Clubs needs we will have enought time to find another route for out March trip.... anyways we have plenty of figure it out.

we'll get er' done really soon. don't you worry.
