I searched but couldn't find the same symptoms.....
Driver side knuckle, TRE removed.
The knuckle is a little stiff, then wants to return to center in a big way. It seems easier to turn when centered, like it's falling into a small hole? Hard to describe.
It certainly isn't linear in it's travel like the passenger side.
I removed the 4 bolts to install a RHD steering arm, but never removed the trunnion.
Is it the trunnion bearing?

Martin

The trunnion bearings take a beating. This is a FJ40, they tend to get beat worse, but still they are a wear item.

So I was correct in thinking it can only be the trunnion bearings then?
If so, I will just go ahead and get a full front end rebuild kit and be done with it. They were "junkyard" (guy pulled them from his LC to sell) axles, so it's to be expected.

Sounds like you are describing what the photo @Tools R Us is showing - a worn trunion bearing race. I'd swap em out if you have it apart.

Thank you Zack.
I'll order a whole rebuild kit then see what I can tear up!
Any particular vendor to go with before I just Google it?

Thank you

Martin

I'm seeing Low Range Offroad has a kit also.
Looks like it has a few more items?

Not worried about the few dollars, but is one better than the other?

Ask Kurt.......

I replied to your PM but figured I'd toss it here too!

We have a FAQ guide for the additional parts you should consider:
Cruiser Outfitters

As for our kit vs the Low Range kit. Our kits are 100% Japanese vs import seals/gaskets with just Japanese bearings. Unless you are ditching your brake baking plates/dust shields and reconfiguring your brake lines, there included backing plate eliminators are wasted money. The hub socket, spring scale and spindle bushings are the only other parts they bundle up. We offer those at a lower price point and can easily bundle them into your kit when you order. So you get the Japanese parts you need, the tools you need and a lower price :D

Give us a call if we can help set up up!

To add closure to this thread, I ordered the kit from Cruiser Outfitters yesterday.
It has shipped already and is due here Saturday. Cant beat that for service!

Thanks as always guys

Martin
I did the cruiser outfitters kit a few months back and it worked great. Kurt is a good dude.

I'd also suggest picking up one of the Wit's end seal drivers... you can make due without it, but I am a sucker for ano blue and It was nice to have.

Also, I'd swap the birf ends while you have the axles out

Oh and a seal puller - I did the hammer and flat bladed screwdriver method but wished I didn't.

I have seal drivers, should be good there. As well as seal pullers.
I'll wait on the birf ends, it has to stop somewhere! lol
I just ordered the hydro assist etc, as well as service items, so I'll leave it as is for now and work the bugs out as they crop up

The whole axle will be out anyways when you do the seal, good time to at least clean them and repack with grease.

For sure, everything will be cleaned an repacked.
I already searched and found a great thread on it here

So I'll follow that and everything will go back together cleaned and packed full of new grease:)
Any other suggestions? I'm wide open to good ideas

Martin

I wish I would have ordered from Cruiser Outfitters. I waited almost a year to do the knuckle job only to find that all 4 trunnion bearings included in the kit that I bought are the wrong bearings. I’m calling the vendor tomorrow and we’ll see what they do.

What brand kit? What is the part number on the bearing?

If you need just bearings, we absolutely offer those too.

Koyo 30304 AJR-2-N are the bearings I need and the bearings in the kit were Koyo 30303R which are smaller than the bearing I pulled off. Since I already paid for the bearings I'm hoping they will just swap them for me so I don't have to buy 4 new bearings and be left with 4 bearings I have no use for. The possible wrinkle is that I discovered this almost a year after the purchase because I was not ready to do the work until now. I had no reason to believe that the order was wrong and I didn't know what bearings were on my truck until I opened it up. Low Range sold me the kit but it looks like it was packed and shipped from Trail Tech. Inside the kit was a bag with 16-18 large studs and nylocks which do not appear to be of any use in a knuckle, I think someone mixed up orders while packing. If it comes down to it I'll contact you for the correct bearings.

IIRC, those are alternate bearings that some substitute for the early axles. But the angle is incorrect, so I wouldn't even use them on a FJ40.
