Hey Community,
I just wondered if this is a common problem and one of you guys knows a quick fix ?
The lock in the middle is doing its job but the right and left ones not. So I ending up with heaps of sand in my back.
Can anybody help?

Cheers Marco

Them bloody koalas! Getting into everything.
Does it snap down with a good push, shove? As in is the mattress in the way. Is it visibly bent?
I just opened my lid and can’t see many things that can go wrong. Other than maybe the gas shock could be bent out or latch points are possibly off set.

Lube your hinges and latches.

The latches on left and right are adjustable. Do the lower gate first, then the upper gate. The upper gate has two latch points. The second one is when the seals are tight. If the lower gate isn;t closing properly, then the upper gate can't do it either.

The gate on my LC was never used and it took a lot of PB Blaster and actuation to get them to move and operate. About three rounds of adjustment and it took care of it.

Yes said it better.
And these tailgates won’t be completely flush fitting, should they stick out a few mm, 1/8 inch? Due to gasket behind right @BILT4ME.

No, they should be flush, just like any other body line. Just like thehood fits flush with the fenders, the rear gates (upper and lower) should fit flush with the body lines (I think the spec is actually +/- 0.5mm)

Ok sounds good thanks. All the tailgate uppers I’ve seen in person are out of spec then.
I think my brother n I had 5 of our 80 s parked side to side and yea all were flawed in some way. Mines out 2 mm. Wrench or hammer? Adjusting latch points in a touch now.

Wrench for loosening, soft hammer to adjust, wrench to snug it back up.

I've done the lower Gate, On spot.
But struggling with the upper one. It seems like that i can't adjust the latch. And the two on each side seems not doing anyth ing to hold the gate. Any suggestions?

I have discovered that slamming my upper gate flexes my lower gate to the point that over time, it has cracked the lower gate just to the right of the release lever on the lower gate.

The upper gate latches on the lower gate.

There is a small plastic piece that covers the latch mechanism inside the latch on the upper gate. Make sure that plastic piece is still intact (look for pics on this forum). Without that plastic piece, the second click will not be achievable and therefore, the gate will not seal. I do NOT think that piece is available by itself. I think it must be purchase as part of the assembly, or buy a salvage latch assembly.

Yes, that plastic thing looks pretty worn. Might be the problem.

Yeah, I’m curious about the same issue. Did you ever find a fix? I’ve noticed that the hatch has no issue closing flush when the tailgate is down, so it seems like the tailgate is definitely the culprit.
